Job Summary:

Miami University (Miami), invites applications and nominations for Dean of the College of Education, Health, and Society position. Reporting directly to Provost and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs, the dean is the chief administrative, academic, and budgetary officer for the College of Education, Health and Society. The dean serves as a role model of integrity and professionalism for the college's faculty and is accessible to both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty and staff. The dean collaborates closely with other deans and others across the university, the regional community, the nation, and the globe to coordinate academic programs, interdisciplinary initiatives, and traditional and cross-disciplinary scholarship. The dean will also work collaboratively with the college to advance, create, and implement programs consonant with the university's strategic plan.

The dean is the public face of the College of Education, Health and Society at Miami. The dean will possess a strong understanding of the education, health, sport leadership, social work and human services industry today. The dean will need to have an understanding of the PK-20 educational landscape of Ohio, while supporting, addressing, and contributing to the broader community needs and development within all the areas of discipline in EHS. The dean will continue the embedded social justice mission of EHS and will continue to focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion within EHS, the larger Miami University, and their community partnerships. The dean will possess the capacity to leverage Miami's existing strengths while developing visibility and prestige in the college's diverse offerings and its growth of health and sports leadership programs. The dean will effectively manage the varied needs of college stakeholders, and its departments while continually challenging students, faculty, donors, and external partners to elevate the level of collaboration and communication amongst each constituency.

Miami’s College of Education, Health and Society (EHS) enrolls 3000 undergraduate and graduate students, with 120 full-time faculty members and 60 staff members. The dean oversees an office budget of approximately $19 million and is comprised of several experienced administrators and staff professionals. The Dean of the College of Education, Health, and Society will:

Build on the College's strong interdisciplinary culture. EHS has a diverse group of disciplines within its departments, which have developed a strong collaborative approach to teaching, research, and service. The dean must be an excellent collaborator and partner who will advance the college by forging innovative programmatic, educational, and research partnerships with the regional community and EHS's numerous place-based partnerships. EHS has a track record of cultivating cross-disciplinary research and is in a position to continue to cultivate this area even more with the University's six other colleges. Innovation in pedagogy, technology, and communication has allowed for greater collaboration and sharing of knowledge than ever before, and the dean will play a larger role in encouraging innovative research while connecting and sharing this research with the rest of Miami University and its external partners; continue to champion diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice. EHS has been a leader within the Miami University community in infusing diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice as a central element of its mission. The new dean will continue to support the college and university's unwavering commitment to academic excellence by fostering a diverse and inclusive community. The dean will also work to recruit, attract, and retain faculty, students, and staff from underrepresented groups in higher education. It is essential that the dean possess the skills, passion, and commitment to advance diversity and equity and foster a welcoming environment for all individuals; strategic Budget Management. All institutions of higher education are facing challenging economic times due to the pandemic, cuts in state funding, and declining enrollment trends. The dean of the EHS will need to develop a budget geared toward sustaining the college. The dean will need to ensure there is an effective allocation of resources to departments and make decisions on how to distribute budgets based on strategic goals and investments of the college; secure additional resources for the college. The dean will actively and collaboratively engage stakeholder communities, such as alumni, foundations, corporations, local communities, donors, and other entities, to support the mission of EHS. In addition, the dean will need to create a plan for additional revenue-generating programs and champion externally funded research to grow EHS further and maintain its competitiveness. Minimum Qualifications:

The successful candidate will hold a terminal degree in one of the College of Education, Health, and Society’s general fields of study and have achieved a distinguished record of scholarly, professional achievement for appointment as a full professor in one of the departments within the college.

Desired Qualifications:

Consideration may be given to candidates with the ability to articulate and implement a vision for research and scholarly activity in the 21st century to position the college as a leader in research, teaching, and service in keeping with Miami University's culture and mission; a strong advocate and record of success in advancing transformational and inclusive excellence; a strong record of identifying, developing, expanding, and sustaining public and community partnerships and sources of funding; the ability to bring visibility to the research and educational accomplishments of the college both within and outside the campus; an ability to partner with the University's advancement office to build foundational relationships with alums, parents, and friends of the college; a deep understanding of the landscape of higher education in the country today, particularly in the disciplines contained with the college; and significant experience addressing the needs of educational and community partners; the breadth of knowledge and foresight needed to identify existing, emerging, and interdisciplinary fields for investment, both within the college and collaboratively with other colleges in Miami University and beyond; a commitment to fostering and facilitating opportunities for interdisciplinary research and collaborations; demonstrated ability to develop and promote activities that support a large and diverse faculty, oversee faculty recruitment and development, manage promotion and tenure, appoint, and provide leadership and direct supervision for departmental chairperson and directors, as needed; ability to foster a culture of high ethical standards and effective collaborative practices in the college, including exceptional fiduciary skills; an energetic and engaging personality with excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; experience in helping shape a strong, collaborative relationship with the new faculty union; demonstrated ability to lead change – including the ability to formulate and articulate a vision, engage and inspire others, and then delegate and support others in achieving the vision; demonstrated ability to foster innovation in teaching pedagogy and curriculum design; exceptional budgetary and financial management skills; experience in fundraising and philanthropic gifts, preferably with experience in government grants and foundations, corporate partners, and other creative associations and bodies; ability to work collegially and collaboratively with leaders throughout the university in support of the shared mission of the university; a commitment to inclusive excellence and ability to ensure a welcoming, nurturing, and equitable environment for a diverse community of faculty, staff, and students, and a track record of leadership in this arena; a deep understanding and appreciation of shared governance and the ability to be transparent with the stakeholders of EHS; experience as a distinguished teacher-scholar; and an innovative and entrepreneurial spirit, with the agility to bring new ideas to fruition in a timely fashion.
