Responsibilities:
Essential Job Functions

1. Promotes positive relations when interacting with patients, visitors, families, physicians, customers, and co-workers.

Greet, smiles and makes eye contact.

Responds quickly to patients and/or other peoples' needs.
Knows and demonstrates six step customer complaint management process

2. Attends and participates in 80% of nursing management meetings and 60% in other assigned committee meetings.

Promote staff attendance at in-service and continuing education programs.
Proctors charge nurse to assign staff to attend.
Participates in seminars/workshops and formal education classes to improve clinical and management skills.
Attends two seminars/workshops or one class yearly.

3. Supports Hospital goals, policies/procedures.

Interprets communication and changes positively to staff

4. Maintains positive rapport with medical staff.

Follows up with physician suggestions and communicated in an objective, non-biased manner.
Relays pertinent information to department managers.
Independently communicates without direction when the need occurs.

5. Meets JCAHO nursing standards and other regulatory standards as appropriate.

No deficiencies following surveys.

6. Monitors daily staff performances and takes appropriate action regarding either positive or negative performance.

Documents staff performance in a performance diary and recommends disciplinary action when indicated.
Supports and follows clinical orientation of new orientees.
As requested completes evaluations according to schedule and communicates concerns to appropriate director/unit manager.
Identifies clinical/theory deficiencies of oneself and seeks out appropriate opportunities to improve.
Registers for attendance at workshop based on area needing improvement.

7. Provides inter-shift information to on-coming supervisor.

Verbally reports at change of shift, ensuring that all pertinent information is given.

8. Completes house rounds to visually assess quality of care and patient progress.

Completes rounds two to three times per shift on critical and problem patients.
Ensures adequate staffing for the acuity of the nursing floor.
Floats staff in and out of areas as needed.
Use the classification system as justification or professional judgement if case warrants.
Intervenes and assists unit when difficult patient situations arise.
Inserts IV, gives direct care, telephone MD's, notifies families, etc., according to protocol.
Recommends and/or intervenes if complaint warrants action.
Plan of action document or phoned within 24 hours.
Keeps hospital administration informed of pertinent departmental issues and patient/employee incidents.
Completes 24 hour report sheet and/or telephones appropriate administrative person as needed.

9. Retrieves items from other departments after hours.

Follows department protocol in Health Information Management, Food Service, Central Service, etc.

10. Assigns patient to room according to MD preference, floor activity, patient condition, and existing protocol.

Assists with expired patient and follows written protocol.
Coordinates family needs as necessary.
Telephones family and assists with arrangements according to protocol.
Schedules routine and emergency operative cases.
Follows written protocol for scheduling.
Arranges for post-anesthesia recovery and follows written protocol.

11. Gathers information to project staffing needs.

Uses classification forms to identify staffing needs for the following shift.
The final staffing plan is based on the intent to provide safe, high quality care at the lowest financial cost.
Assigns float staff to floors and assigns other staff to appropriate units based on need.
Completes this prior to the next shift.
Grants days off when staff exceeds patient demands and follows written protocol.
Calls in extra staff according to the demand of work load.
Follows classification system and staffing guidelines.

12. Serves as authority when emergency plans are implemented.

Follows emergency plan protocol.
Observes staff performance during implementation of emergency plan.
Critiques staff performance and recommends educational needs to directors/unit managers.

Job Description:
Job Requirements

Education

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required.
A Bachelor's degree in Nursing is preferred or some management training courses.
NIH Stroke Scale training required within 1 month of hire or upon completion of orientation process.
FEMA training for Incident Command System ( ICS) - (courses 100, 200, 700 and 800) required within 3 months of hire.

Experience

Minimum of two years' experience as a staff nurse.
Previous ICU/ER experience or knowledge helpful.

License/Certifications

Current valid Registered Nurse (RN) license, valid compact multistate license, or a temporary permit while awaiting licensure required.
Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
Current Advanced Cardio Life Support (ACLS) certification required within 3 months of hire.
Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification required within 6 months of hire.
Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required within 6 months of hire.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

Knowledge of current professional nursing concepts and principles, nursing unit operation on a 24 hour basis.
Working knowledge of management concepts and principles, and the ability to apply, but not limited to the following: supervision, delegation, staff development.
Skills in the operation and use of nursing techniques and supporting equipment and materials, able to communicate both orally and in writing to staff, other departments and administration, training and orienting new staff and handling emergency situations.
Ability to conduct meetings and ensure information is given to the appropriate staff, identify problems and offer well thought out solutions to those problems.
Write and communicate proposals regarding the management of the floor or other nursing problems, be aware of changes and adapt to and communicate those changes in a supportive manner to all staff.
