Job Description
Middle School Art Teacher at Collins Middle School in Salem Public Schools. In a diverse and welcoming school environment, the teacher will instruct 6-8 students in Visual Arts, fostering artistic expression and ensuring the Arts are alive throughout Collins Middle School.

What You’ll Do
The successful candidate will be a passionate, mission‑driven, and collaborative educator who desires an opportunity to teach in a diverse and welcoming school environment. This teacher will instruct 6-8 students in Visual Arts and will be expected to offer instruction that is appropriately modified to address individual student needs. The teacher will foster in students a love of artistic expression and thought and will be a driving force to ensure that the Arts are alive throughout Collins Middle School. The teacher will work with school administration and fellow specialists to positively manage student behavior and collaborate in a standards‑based environment to provide exceptional education to students.

Role Responsibilities

Develop student understanding, ability, and appreciation of a variety of artistic mediums such as painting, sketching, designing, and sculpturing.

Employ a variety of literature as a tool to engage students in their understanding of and exposure to traditional and contemporary art.

Inspire and motivate students to improve their skills, thinking, and appreciation of art in multiple mediums.

Plan and execute appropriate instructional and learning strategies that reflect a deep understanding of the needs (academic and social/emotional) of students.

Provide structure in the classroom by building and maintaining a positive classroom environment conducive to learning.

Collaborate with academic core content teachers to infuse curriculum with the Arts.

Collaborate with fellow specialists to ensure that students have a well‑rounded learning experience and that community events are planned to showcase students’ successes and talent.

Job Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree (Required); Master’s Degree (Preferred)

Required Massachusetts teaching certification/licensure in Middle School Art 5-8.

Maintain professional competence through in‑service education activities provided by the District and/or self‑selected professional growth activities.

Minimum of 2 years teaching experience; working in an urban public school or charter school setting preferred.

Proven track record of raising student achievement scores in an urban/turnaround environment highly desired.

Ability to meet the expectations of the Massachusetts Standards and Indicators of Effective Teaching Practice.

Proficiency with technology (blended learning, teacher/family communication suites, Google G‑Suite Apps, computer design applications, etc.) desirable.

Second language (Spanish and/or Portuguese) proficiency a plus.

Bilingual candidates and candidates of color strongly encouraged to apply.

Current authorization to work in the United States.

Citizenship, residency or work visa required.

Work Year
Teachers in Salem Public Schools work a 185‑day school year (180 student contact days plus 5 professional development days).
