Maintenance Worker
This position may be filled as a Maintenance Worker II or Maintenance Worker III depending on the selected candidate's qualifications. Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity:
Maintenance Worker II: preferred hiring range is $19.51 to $21.62 an hour ($40,580.80 - $44,969.60 Annually).
Maintenance Worker III: preferred hiring range is $20.86 to $25.65 an hour ($43,388.80 - $53,352.00 Annually).
The Maintenance Worker II performs routine semi-skilled work in a variety of construction, repair and maintenance assignments involving the use of common tools and operates equipment in connection with the semi-skilled tasks to which assigned; Primarily and most frequently the work done here is under general supervision, with related functional areas and more advanced applications.
Sidewalks Crew: Typical work schedule is Tuesday - Friday: 6:30 AM - 5:00 PM - Under the direction of a Maintenance Crew Supervisor, the selected candidate will assist in performing semi-skilled labor in the installation, maintenance and repair of sidewalks and related infrastructure.
Concrete Crew: Typical work schedule is Monday - Friday: 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM - This position is part of a dedicated Concrete Crew responsible for supporting Capital Improvement Projects related to sidewalk repair and construction throughout the City. Under the direction of a Maintenance Crew Supervisor, the selected candidate will assist in performing semi-skilled labor in the installation, maintenance and repair of sidewalks and related infrastructure.
Street Marking/Asphalt Crew: Typical work schedule is Monday - Thursday: 6:30 AM - 5:00 PM - Under the direction of a Maintenance Crew Supervisor, the selected candidate will assist in performing semi-skilled labor in the maintenance and repair of City streets to include repairing potholes, utility cuts and street marking.
Refuse Collection & Disposal Crew: Typical work schedule is Tuesday Friday: 6:30 AM 5:00 PM - Under the direction of the Refuse Maintenance Crew Supervisor, the selected candidate will assist in the collection and disposal of solid waste throughout the City.
As of March 28, 2024, this position is part of the Labor and Trades bargaining unit. The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS, however the City has a Portability Agreement with VRS and there are certain provisions that must be met. Supports and completes maintenance and repair assignments according to required specifications.
Supports the preparation of job sites for the maintenance and repair of infrastructure, facilities, and/or grounds.
Assists senior workers in semiskilled work, emergency operations, and other tasks.
Operates hand tools and power equipment associated with maintenance, repair, custodial, and construction operations.
Conducts cleanup and restoration work on assignments.
May operate a vehicle in the performance of duties.
Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of City equipment, tools and other resources including work time.
High school diploma or GED AND general knowledge of maintenance, construction, and repair work including knowledge of mechanical/automotive equipment.
One (1) year of work experience in general maintenance, construction, and repair work including knowledge of mechanical/automotive equipment.
Subject to emergency and stand-by call and must respond within minimum response time to City facility based on Departmental guidelines. (May require ability to obtain a Class A CDL with Tanker endorsement.
May be subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing regulations.
Basic knowledge of the methods and tools used in maintenance and repair work.
Basic knowledge of maintenance, repair and construction activities.
Basic knowledge of mechanical and equipment operation.
Ability to understand and apply basic instructions and applications.
Writing
~ Basic: writing skill to provide information, documentation, and/or record on maintenance needs, repairs, and/or series of numbers and addresses.

Basic: ability to perform the four basic arithmetic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division.

Regular & routine interaction involving providing or exchanging basic information, explain issues and concerns, listen to others and to identify maintenance and repair issues or problems. Requires Immediate Direction: The immediate supervisor may, at times, provide close and constant review.
