A mission-driven organization is seeking an experienced Director of Human Resources to serve as a key leader within its HR function. This role supports a large, distributed workforce across multiple locations and operational units, providing strategic guidance, operational oversight, and hands-on employee relations leadership. Reporting to the Chief Human Resources Officer, the Director will partner closely with senior leaders to ensure effective HR practices, consistent policy application, and a positive, compliant workplace environment.
Employee Relations & Leadership
Serve as the primary HR advisor to organizational leaders on employee relations and personnel matters
Manage complex employee relations issues, including performance concerns, disciplinary actions, conflict resolution, and separations
Provide sound, practical guidance while ensuring compliance with employment laws and organizational policies
Ensure consistent application of policies and maintain compliance across all business units
Partner with leadership to mitigate risk and resolve sensitive matters appropriately
Guide leaders through performance management processes, including coaching and corrective action
Balance organizational objectives with cultural awareness and employee engagement
HR Operations & Oversight
Collaborate with HR team members across functions including payroll, benefits, recruiting, onboarding, and HRIS
Support HR initiatives, system improvements, and operational enhancements
Serve as a key partner to senior HR leadership, ensuring continuity of operations
Mentor and support HR team members, contributing to overall team development
Bachelor’s degree in human resources or related field
- 10+ years of progressive HR leadership experience, with strong expertise in employee relations
- HR certification (SHRM-CP/SCP or PHR/SPHR) preferred
- Ability to manage sensitive matters with discretion and professionalism
- Experience in a nonprofit, multi-site, or mission-driven environment is a plus
Full-time, based in Richmond, VA
Occasional evening/weekend work and travel required
