Under supervision, to perform the most specialized tasks of specimen preparation, provide training, daily unit coordination and act as a resource for laboratory staff during the pre-analytical collection and/or preparation of laboratory tests.

Santa Clara Valley Medical Center - SCVMC is a full-service tertiary acute care teaching hospital with 699 licensed beds providing a wide range of specialized services, including Rehabilitation, Burn, Trauma, and NICU. News and World Report as #6 Rehabilitation Hospital in the nation and #1 in the West and designated as a 2024 High Performing hospital for Maternity Care, Heart Failure, Stroke, Hip Fracture, and Pneumonia.
O'Connor Hospital - O'Connor Hospital (OCH) is a 358 licensed bed acute care facility offering a full range of inpatient and outpatient medical, surgical and specialty programs to residents of Santa Clara County. OCH has grown significantly over the past five years in both its inpatient volume and its Emergency Department visits. Along with these volume increases other ancillary and clinical departments like imaging, lab, pharmacy, and respiratory have seen growth as well.
Louise Regional Hospital - Since 1989, St. Louise Regional Hospital (SLRH) has been caring for the residents in Santa Clara and San Benito Counties, offering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient medical specialties. SLRH has 93 beds, is a Designated Primary Stroke Center, and is the only acute care hospital in the area. Located in Gilroy, SLRH maintains a CALSTAR 2 emergency helicopter base on the premises.
Regional Medical Center Regional Medical Center (RMC) is a 258-bed hospital that is the main emergency healthcare provider for East San Jos, treating a wide range of critical and life-threatening conditions for more than 60 years. Since the SCVH integration of RMC effective 4/1/25, RMC has expanded the critical services including Level II trauma, Thrombectomy capable Stroke Center and STEMI care, and has been seeing an increased number of emergency visits and inpatient volume.
Performs the more specialized tasks associated with pre-analytical specimen preparation in the areas of Reference Testing, Chemistry, Toxicology, Special Chemistry, Transfusion Services, Microbiology, Hematology, Point of Care Program, Surgical Pathology, or Cytology;
Trains other employees in the specialty areas of Phlebotomy, Reference Testing, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, Toxicology, Microbiology, Hematology, Transfusion Services, Point of Care Program, Surgical Pathology, or Cytology;
Investigates and coordinates esoteric testing sent to reference laboratories;
Assists in planning and implementing special projects; Acts as a technical resource to clients and end users of laboratory services;
May provide daily direction and unit coordination for Medical Laboratory Assistant I and II staff;
Admits and accessions specimens into information systems;
May perform phlebotomy on adult and pediatric patients;
Prepares blood components, reagents and culture media to be used in performing laboratory tests;
Reads and records temperatures and other quality control data; checks alarm systems on refrigerators, incubators and other laboratory equipment;
May clean and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and report problems to the appropriate supervisor;
Performs weekly, monthly, and semi-annual chemical safety monitoring;
Operates sterilizing equipment;
Operates automated specimen transport and pre-analytical systems;
Removes waste including biomedical, chemical and regular waste;
Experience Note: The required knowledge and abilities would normally be acquired through successful completion of high school or its equivalency including or supplemented by courses in high school science plus three years experience in medical laboratory services equivalent to the Medical Laboratory Assistant II. A certificate in Phlebotomy issued by the State of California is required for some positions. Sufficient education, training and experience to demonstrate possession of the knowledge and abilities listed below. Use and care of laboratory and related medical equipment;
Laboratory and hospital information systems;
Specific laboratory techniques and procedures;
Appropriate specimen collection techniques and specimen requirements;
Occupational hazards (including biohazards), and safety precautions required in laboratory work;
Organizational structure of laboratories, hospitals and clinics;
Appropriate customer service. Train staff and provide oral and written directions of a technical nature in exact detail;
Train others in phlebotomy techniques and practices;
Perform advanced laboratory manipulative techniques;
