Position Overview

Job Title: Architect

Grade: GS-14

Locations: Washington, DC; Quantico, VA; or Huntsville, AL

Working Hours: 8:00 am – 4:30 pm (Flexible)

Key Requirements

U.S. citizen

Eligible to obtain a Top Secret clearance

Valid driver license (or ability to obtain one)

Availability for some travel

Proof of completion of the basic education requirement by submission of college transcripts by the closing date

Physical Demands

Work is principally sedentary, but requires occasional walking, bending, and inspection of equipment, construction sites, or field offices.

Work Environment

Primarily office setting; occasional meetings and on‑site inspections may involve exposure to construction activity.

Major Duties – GS‑13

Design, plan, evaluate, and coordinate construction and alteration of FBI facilities.

Provide architectural expertise on budgeting, space planning, and maintenance of facilities.

Liaise between the FBI, stakeholders, and contract A/E firms, coordinating plan reviews.

Set architectural standards for FBI facilities, including space planning, structural and life‑safety requirements.

Prepare working drawings, specifications, and construction details for in‑house projects; review contractor cost estimates.

Travel to project sites for on‑site reviews, data collection, and coordination with local FBI representatives and other agencies.

Major Duties – GS‑14

Serve as senior technical authority on architectural matters across the FBI, its territories, and contractors.

Provide guidance, direction, training, and oversight to lower‑level architects.

Offer written or oral input on project performance to unit management.

Job Summary

National Capital Region Section – Provides modern, safe, and secure work environments for HQ divisions in Washington, DC.

Real Property Management Section – Administers facilities management, engineering and design research, construction and spatial modification solutions, maintenance and energy monitoring, and logistical services for the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA.

Redstone Facilities Services Section – Manages planning, construction, occupancy, facilities, and services across the FBI Redstone campus in Huntsville, AL.

Field Operations Support Section – Provides real‑estate and facility support for FBI Field Office property portfolios, international legat locations, fleet inventory, and firearms range program.

Basic Requirements

Degree: Architecture or related field including 60 semester hours of architectural coursework with at least 30 semester hours in architectural design, and 6 semester hours each in structural technology, materials and construction methods, and environmental control systems.

OR

Combination of education and experience:

Education (college‑level) sufficient to provide thorough knowledge of professional architecture.

Experience of one year in an architect’s office or architectural work for each year short of graduation; at least five years required if no college coursework.

Specialized Experience (SE)

GS‑13: Minimum of one year's SE equivalent to GS‑12, including:

Ability to prepare, read, and interpret scaled design contract drawings, floor plans, blueprints, and shop drawings; abstract reasoning for space assessment.

Working knowledge of related engineering fields (structural, mechanical, electrical).

Knowledge of International Building Code, NFPA Life Safety Code, and applicable Federal, state, and local codes.

GS‑14: Minimum of one year's SE equivalent to GS‑13, including:

Mastery of advanced architectural concepts and practice gained through a bachelor’s degree or extensive experience.

Knowledge of contract administration and project management to plan, design, evaluate, and oversee construction projects cost‑effectively.
