Maternal Fetal Medicine Nurse PractitionerResponsible for providing prenatal, postnatal, general medical care and treatment of patients within the Maternal Fetal Medicine division which is a division of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Nurse Practitioners are expected to function as an independent provider primarily coordinating pre-pregnancy, prenatal and post-partum care in women with high-risk pregnancies. This position will provide a combination of inpatient and outpatient care duties.Maternal Fetal Medicine nurse practitioners' function in an expanded nursing role and perform selected tasks and services within the province of medicine as well as tasks that fall within the province of nursing. Nursing and medicine must maintain ongoing collaboration in education and practice so that the nurse practitioner is maximally effective in meeting the primary health-care needs of women. When performing nursing aspects of this role, the practitioner must have the opportunity to engage in independent as well as co-operative decision-making. When performing expanded aspects of the role that overlap with medicine, the practitioner must function in collaboration with qualified physicians within the framework of jointly approved guidelines. Nurse practitioners not only must be prepared and competent to apply additional knowledge and skills, but also must be ready and willing to accept responsibility and accountability for their practice.This position will require travel between all Maternal Fetal Medicine locations and Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.ResponsibilitiesObtain a complete health, psychosocial, obstetric, and gynecologic history and record findings in a systematic, accurate, and succinct formPerform a complete physical examination, with specific emphasis on the reproductive systemOrder, perform, and interpret routine laboratory testsDevelop and implement plans for health promotion and health maintenance, including plans for disease prevention and provision of health education and counselingProvide periodic health assessment of normal, non-pregnant, and asymptomatic womenProvide clinical management of women having gynecologic problemsProvide assessment, education, and management for family planning and fertility controlProvide prenatal care for women with pregnancies, giving attention to both maternal and fetal healthProvide postpartum care, including attention to parent and infant relationships, for women who have had pregnanciesProvide health education and counseling, with emphasis on physical and psychosocial dimensions of adolescence, sexuality, childbearing, parenting, climacteric, aging, and family lifeCo-manage care for patients with selected health complications in collaboration with the physicianArrange referrals to other members of the health-care team as needed and to community resources as appropriateQualificationsRequired:Nurse Practitioners must have a MSN with a nurse practitioner focus. Must be a licensed RN by the Virginia Board of Nursing and a certified nurse practitioner.Physician Assistants must have a MPA and be credentialed as a licensed Physician Assistant within the Commonwealth of Virginia.Preferred:Experience as a Nurse Practitioner or a Physician Assistant with obstetric patients is preferred by not required.
