The OR Unit Specialist is an RN who assumes an expanded role within the OR. Based on knowledge and experience, the specialist works with nursing leadership in the OR to establish standards for the assigned specialties, acts as a liaison for surgeons, facilitates case flow, assists in the orientation and training of OR personnel, and helps maintain adequate par levels of equipment, supplies, and implants within the surgical specialties. The specialist remains knowledgeable of procedures, surgical and nursing techniques for the area of specialization and seeks ways to incorporate that knowledge into daily practice.

Teaches perioperative nursing by functioning in both the scrub and circulating roles.

Completes documentation regarding nursing personnel competency regarding specialty skills and equipment.

Works with the OR nursing leadership team to establish nursing standards for patient care within the assigned specialty.

Participates in unit and hospital continuing education programs.

Serves as a technical resource person to other team members and OR personnel.

Demonstrates good communication skills with surgeons, nursing staff, and OR nursing leadership.

In conjunction with OR nursing leadership, establishes an orientation and education plan for the specialty.

Serves as liaison between vendors and surgeon needs.

Develops, in conjunction with Nurse Manager, Unit Performance Improvement Programs.

Assists with policy creation and implementation.

Specialized Diploma graduate of an accredited school of Nursing.

2 years diversified perioperative nursing experience with both scrubbing and circulating proficiency, focusing on surgery specialty.

Enhanced surgical knowledge.

RN – Licensed Registered Nurse in New Jersey, State of New Jersey.

RN – Licensed Registered Nurse in Pennsylvania, State of Pennsylvania.

CNOR – Certified Nurse Operating Room – Competency & Credentialing Institute.

Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.

Patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.
