Volunteer Adult Literacy Tutor

For more than 40 years, Literacy NJ has empowered adults by providing free instruction in reading, writing, math, English as a Second Language (ESL), digital literacy, GED preparation, job readiness, and U.S. citizenship preparation. Our trained volunteers are at the heart of this mission, helping learners build confidence, independence, and opportunity.

What You'll Do

As a volunteer tutor, you'll work one-on-one or with a small group of adult learners in a supportive, learner-centered environment. Depending on your interests and your student's goals, you may help learners:

Improve their English speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills

Build basic reading, writing, and math skills

Prepare for the GED or U.S. Citizenship test

Strengthen digital literacy and job readiness skills

Gain confidence navigating everyday life, work, and their community

No Teaching Experience? No Problem.

You don't need to be a teacher to make a difference. We provide:

Comprehensive tutor training

Ongoing guidance and instructional resources

A student match based on your interests, experience, and availability

Continued support from our staff throughout your volunteer journey

Volunteer Commitment

2 hours per week tutoring

Flexible scheduling based on you and your learner's availability

Sessions typically take place at a convenient public location, such as a local library, or another mutually agreed-upon setting. Virtual teaching options are also available
