The incumbent will serve as the Industrial Hygienist within the Safety, Health and Environmental Protection Branch responsible for ensuring that all APHIS facilities, nationwide, fully meet compliance standards through effective management and oversight of the occupational safety, health, medical monitoring, ergonomics, workers' compensation, drug free workplace, and environmental protection programs.
Citizens, Nationals or those who owe allegiance to the U.The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity.
Provides information and assistance with monitoring procedures and other factors related to the identification and correction of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive hazards.
Recommends policies and procedures for chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive hazard control program for APHIS management.
Evaluates employee health testing needs, as related to occupational hazards within the Agency, Department and Federal and State governments.
Performs periodic surveys and audits of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive hazard programs in the Agency.
Participates in special projects and field surveys requested by the national and regional offices.

A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science
A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene
Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). ( )
FOR THE GS-13 LEVEL: In addition to the Basic Requirement above, applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-12 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates:
Working with or managing assessments of facility safety, safety and health incidents, complaints, accidents, or occupational health programs.
Develops and executes training and education material for employees, supervisors, managers, or other safety and occupational health personnel in safety or occupational health subjects.
Leads projects developing, collecting, analyzing, evaluating, and interpreting technical data to extract information to develop decisions, recommendations, corrective action plans, and process improvements.
Writing policies and procedures for industrial hygiene, safety and occupational health, hearing conservation and respiratory protection programs.
Planning, conducting, reporting and ensuring follow-up reviews of actions related to on-site safety and health issues specific to indoor air quality and noise sampling collections.
This position requires specific coursework or a degree in a specific field to be basically qualified.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
