The University Police Department (UPD) is responsible for law enforcement, physical security, and emergency response at Cal Poly Pomona. The department is staffed by trained police officers, professional civilian staff and auxiliary personnel and is operational 24 hours-a-day, year-round. The peace officers of this department have statewide police authority and are vested with the same law enforcement powers and responsibilities as the municipal police or sheriff's departments in any California community. The department serves as "first responder" for a broad range of crisis issues on the campus including medical aid calls, injuries and environmental emergencies. In addition, the department offers a wide range of programs and services designed to enhance the safety and security of the community and support the mission of the university. These responsibilities are carried out through a set of core values that reflect commitment to the highest standards of excellence and incorporate the community oriented and 21st Century policing philosophies. The University Police Department is part of the Administrative Affairs Division whose mission is to provide quality fiscal, human and facility services in support of the university community through partnerships and innovative solutions.
General Law Enforcement: Enforce local, county, and state laws. Employee investigates criminal and non-criminal occurrences, makes arrests, interviews witnesses, transports prisoners, and testifies in court proceedings as required. Community Interaction: Builds rapport between professional/civilian employees, students, volunteers, staff, faculty and visitors by promoting public trust through ethical behavior and adherence to a set of core values as set forth by the Division of Administrative Affairs. Seeks opportunities to foster partnerships and build diverse teams within the university community. Supports the principles of community oriented policing.
Report Writing: Includes drafting traffic collision sketches and crime scene diagrams as needed. May be required to generate reports on a computer.
Address housing residents, conduct public tours, safety talks. Communicate with a multi-ethnic and diverse community.
Training: Participates in training which includes classroom instruction, and on-the-job training. Employee must meet all training requirements established by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) and Department policy.
High School Diploma/GED - High school diploma or equivalent
Police Officer Cadets in this classification must be or have: • Eligible to be a peace officer in the State of California.
Knowledge and Abilities: • Working knowledge of current law enforcement methods and procedures. • Effective oral and written communication skills, including writing clear and comprehensive reports. • certified training program, including obtaining a Basic Course Certificate
Working knowledge of current law enforcement methods and procedures
Ability to demonstrate proficiency in the use of firearms, defensive tactics and emergency vehicle operation. A minimum firearms proficiency score must be maintained as a condition of employment
Ability to pass a medical, physiological and physical agility exam
certified training program, including obtaining a Basic Course Certificate

Positions that require driving for university business by using a personal or state vehicle must comply with the Authorized University Driver Policy. Driving records are monitored and evaluated by the Risk Management Department. The Risk Management Department evaluates a good driving report based on the following criteria. Not have more than 3 DMV Points, if their license is Class C or, 4. Not have more than 5 DMV Points, if their license is Class A, B, or C with endorsements.
