Assistant attorney - compliance

Under direction, investigates alleged and suspected violations of criminal and civil law falling within the jurisdiction of the District Attorney’s Office; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

This is the journey level District Attorney Investigator. An employee of this class conducts difficult investigations assigned to the District Attorney’s Office. Work is performed with considerable independence, may involve an element of personal danger, and may entail long hours of work at unusual times of the day or night.

Employees of the District Attorney Investigator series are statutory full-time peace officers and have a duty to act upon criminal violations occurring in their presence.

Conducts investigations of civil and criminal matters including, but not limited to, consumer, real estate, insurance, and welfare fraud; gathers intelligence information concerning alleged criminal activities.

assists attorneys in court; reviews reports of other law enforcement agencies to determine if all investigative avenues have been explored; Serves legal papers such as subpoenas, warrants and summonses; serves and executes extradition papers.

Assists in coordinating the investigative activities of the District Attorney’s Office with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.

Develops and maintains positive relations with the public to gain compliance and trust; fosters collaborative partnerships, which may include making presentations to community members and organizations.As assigned, acts in mutual aid situations, which may include active law enforcement duties; May provide technical training and direction to lower level sworn and non-sworn investigative staff.

Employees may purchase additional term life insurance to a maximum of $200,000 at the group rate.

125 Flexible Benefits Plan : This is a voluntary program that allows employees to use pre-tax dollars to pay for health-related expenses that are not paid by a medical, dental or vision plan (Health Flexible Spending Account $2550 annual limit with a $500 carry over); and dependent care costs (Dependent Care Assistance Plan $5000 annual limit).

Safety Retirement : Employees in the classification of DA Investigator I or II are Safety Members in the San Joaquin County Retirement System.

Holiday : Depending on date of hire into the unit, employees earn either 10 or 14 holidays peryear.

An employee is eligible to receive eight hours administrative leave if the leave balance equals at least one-half of the cumulative amount that the employee is eligible to accrue. The employee must also be on payroll during the entire calendar year.

Bereavement Leave : 3 days of paid leave for the death of an immediate family member; 2 additional days of accrued leave for death of employee’s spouse, domestic partner, parent or child.

After employees serve 52 weeks (2080 hours) on each step of the range, they are eligible for a merit increase to the next step.

Bilingual Pay : Each employee who is designated by the appointing authority and approved by the County Administrator and who has passed a bilingual proficiency examination administered by the Human Resources Division shall receive a bi-weekly supplement of $50.

Standby Pay : Employees designated by appointing authority to be in standby status are compensated at 20% of their regular hourly rate. Employees in the District Attorney Investigator series designated to the rotation of standby duty for purposes of implementing the Officer Involved Critical Incident Protocol shall regularly be assigned a take-home County vehicle in lieu of standby pay for as long as the Protocol exists.

Pay : Employees who hold an IntermediatePOST Certificate and do not possess an Advanced POST certificate shall be compensated at a bi-weekly dollar amount of$84.80. Employees who possess an Adnvanced POST Certificate shall be compensated at a bi-weekly dollar amountof $283.20.

Job Sharing : Educational Reimbursement Program : Eligible employees enrolled in an approved four (4) year College or University academic program may be reimbursed up to $800 per semester for a maximum of $1600 per fiscal year.

Employees may take up to 40 hours per year, but not more than eight (8) hours per month, to participate in their children’s school activities.

Oral Exam : The oral exam is a structured interview process that will assess the candidate’s education, training, and experience and may include a practical exercise. A rate-out is an examination that involves a paper rating of the candidate’s application using the following criteria: education, training, and experience. Veteran’s Points : Eligible veterans, unmarried widows and widowers of veterans of the United States Armed Forces who have been honorably discharged and who have served during wartime shall be given veteran’s points in initial appointment to County service. Eligible veterans receive 5 points and eligible disabled veterans receive 10 points.
