Registered Nurse (RN) Correctional Health

Location: Dallas, TX Schedule: Day Shift (6am-6:30pm) Employment Type: Temporary/Contract Patient Population: Adults in a correctional healthcare setting

Position Overview

The Registered Nurse provides and coordinates care for adult patients within a correctional health environment. Using the nursing process, the RN assesses patients, identifies nursing diagnoses, develops and implements individualized care plans, and evaluates patient responses.

This environment serves a high volume of patients with behavioral health needs. Experience with psychiatric nursing, behavioral health, crisis intervention, and de-escalation techniques is highly preferred.

Key Responsibilities

Provide nursing care in accordance with the Texas Nursing Practice Act, established protocols, multidisciplinary care plans, and clinical standards.

Perform ongoing patient assessments and respond appropriately to changes in condition.

Exercise independent clinical judgment while delivering patient-centered care.

Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing care plans.

Coordinate with physicians, behavioral health professionals, and other members of the healthcare team.

Delegate appropriate interventions to qualified healthcare personnel based on patient needs and staff competencies.

Help patients move through healthcare encounters without preventable complications or delays.

Perform medication passes accurately and according to established procedures.

Assess and respond to patient healthcare requests.

Complete withdrawal assessments using COWS and CIWA protocols.

Administer insulin and other prescribed medications.

Provide wound care and monitor healing progress.

Support scheduled and urgent clinic visits.

Conduct patient rounding within assigned correctional health units.

Perform ECGs and other basic clinical procedures.

Maintain accurate and timely patient documentation.

Follow all safety, security, confidentiality, and infection-control requirements.

Qualifications

Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse license in Texas.

Current BLS certification.

Nursing experience in a hospital, correctional health, behavioral health, emergency, psychiatric, or similarly fast-paced clinical environment preferred.

Experience working with adult patients required.

Experience with medication administration, patient assessment, withdrawal protocols, wound care, insulin administration, and ECGs preferred.

Behavioral health, psychiatric nursing, or de-escalation experience is highly preferred.

Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of applicable nursing standards of care and clinical practices.

Ability to assess patients and make sound clinical decisions independently.

Effective interpersonal and patient-communication skills.

Ability to remain calm and professional during behavioral or medical emergencies.

Strong observation, documentation, and written communication skills.

Basic computer literacy and experience using electronic health records.

Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary healthcare and correctional teams.

Ability to follow established safety and security procedures within a correctional environment.
