Counselor (High School)

KIPP NYC Public Schools is a non-profit network of 18 free, public charter schools in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. We partner with families and communities to create joyful and rigorous schools in pursuit of a more just world. In 1995 we started our first middle school, KIPP Academy, in the Bronx, with a vision that every child grows up free to create the future they want for themselves and their communities. Today, our network consists of eight elementary schools, nine middle schools, one high school, and KIPP Forward, a comprehensive program to support our students and alumni in choosing and preparing for the educational and career paths that fit their goals and sense of purpose. In August 2009, KIPP NYC College Prep High School (CPHS) opened its doors to serve students graduating from KIPP middle schools in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Upper Manhattan, as well as other New York City students seeking a rigorous, college-preparatory high school program. KIPP NYC College Prep builds on the key elements of their successful elementary and middle schools, including more time in school, a focus on student achievement, highly qualified and committed faculty, and a school culture that supports success in learning. Over 90% of students enroll in at least one type of rigorous academics, including (16) Advanced Placement (AP), (17) Dual Enrollment, and (13) Honors courses. Last, CPHS provides a comprehensive college and career counseling department to ensure students engage in enriching summer programming, develop individual career plans, are fully prepared for the SAT college entrance exam, and go on to enroll in a college or career opportunity that meets their interests, abilities, and financial needs. Since its founding, 99% of CPHS students have graduated from high school, 91% have matriculated to a 2- or 4-year college, and 49% have received a college degree in 6 or more years.
Our high school will expand to an additional facility beginning in 2026-2027, transitioning into a Lower School and Upper School model! The new building, located just a seven-minute walk from our current state-of-the-art campus at 75 Canal St. West, will feature 40 classrooms, eight state-of-the-art science labs, double gymnasiums, a commercial kitchen and food prep space, a cafetorium with an outdoor patio, a 10,000 sq. ft. rooftop play space, and dedicated dance, art, music, health, weight, and cardio rooms.
KIPP NYC is looking for teachers who combine the ability to motivate and educate, to develop academic as well as character skills, and to make a college preparatory education relevant both now and for the future.

Planning a college preparatory curriculum that combines the school's standards, New York State Standards, and, most importantly, fosters critical thinking.
The 10th Grade Career Counselor is an important part of the College and Career Counseling team serving our sophomore cohort of students enrolled at KIPP NYC College Prep. The 10th Grade Career Counselor works with students to find and matriculate into summer programs (i.e., pre-college, internships, jobs, volunteer, and enrichment programs) and prepares them through career-readiness lessons and activities, including the creation of an online career plan and resume. By ensuring our students dedicate time and attention to building their resume and gaining great summer experiences, this role contributes to the overall success of the organization by helping students towards the path of high school graduation and college matriculation, as well as successful transition into careers post-graduation. Additionally, the Career Counselor facilitates a career elective class, Honors Academy, a deeper dive into career skill-building and postsecondary readiness for academically high-performing 10th grade students (approximately 100 students), along with the other 10th grade Career Counselor.

Co-planning and teaching the sophomore Honors Academy course from September through June
Providing direct one-on-one or small group career and summer program counseling to a cohort of 600+ high school students.
Maintaining our databases with current student information, program applications, partnership details, etc.
Writing curriculum and teaching career lessons and workshops focusing on career readiness skills such as time management, professional communication, resume building, etc.
Working with students to develop a yearly career plan that includes career assessment, career assessment reflection, and summer plans related to their career interests.
Planning and executing career exposure events, including career speaker series, summer programs fair, and field trips to professional organizations.
Meeting programmatic summer placement goals with a cohort from freshman year through junior year (40% of freshmen, 60% of sophomores, and 80% of juniors will complete a summer opportunity) by working with students to identify summer programs of interest and support during the application process.
Acting as liaison between student, families, organizations, and staff to ensure successful student acceptance and matriculation to summer programs. In addition, working with students during the summer to ensure participation and completion of summer programs.
Researching and developing new partnerships with external organizations to increase support for the career and summer programs team.
Advising a small group of students through their four years of high school as part of our school-wide advisory program, working to promote academic success, college readiness, career awareness, and self-discovery.

Experience with progress monitoring toward goals through tracking and analyzing data over time
Fluency in all Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides) and Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
Fully engage in weekly PLC meetings, including adding to the agenda, analyzing data, and actively brainstorming and action planning for solutions
Willingness to check email/texts after hours for urgent requests, to successfully meet pressing deadlines/deliverables, or for emergency situations
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year educational institution

This role is based in NYC and will require travel to our schools. If you relocate outside of a commutable distance or out of the state of NY, your employment will be subject to review, which may include separation from KIPP NYC. You must notify HR if you move or have plans to relocate.
