Clinical Laboratory Scientist is a certified laboratory professional who performs complex laboratory diagnostic testing on human specimens for diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of disease in clinical laboratory specialties including, but not limited to, Hematology, Chemistry, Immunohematology (Blood Bank), Microbiology, Immunology, Cytogenetics, Anatomic Pathology, Electron Microscopy, Molecular Diagnostics, and Flow Cytometry.

Performs a broad range of laboratory procedures including all testing and tasks of the medical laboratory technologist occupation. In addition, performs advanced and complex laboratory procedures; analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles. Implements policies and procedures of clinical laboratory testing.
Accurately performs pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical phases of testing.
Evaluates and solves problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis taking into account physiologic processes and requirements.
Maintains and documents the optimal functioning of laboratory equipment.
Uses, calibrates, identifies malfunctions, repairs, and performs preventive maintenance of laboratory equipment.
Diagnoses deviations in test performance due to instrument malfunction.
Performs and documents quality control and assurance activities and corrective actions related to test performance using statistical principles and theories of performance improvement.
Evaluates and implements new techniques and procedures in the laboratory in terms of equipment, method comparison, and establishment of reference intervals using statistical methods and theoretical knowledge.
Communicates effectively and courteously while working as a healthcare team member.
Provides excellent service as defined by the customer (healthcare providers, patients, and others).
Gives direction and guidance using underlying principles of laboratory testing.
Evaluates the validity of data in relation to the system and accepted assay procedures.
Correlates quantitative data with patient (i.e., history medications) to verify results.
Recognizes abnormal results that require immediate attention by the physician and reports them directly.
Responsible for the generation of laboratory results from the work area into the laboratory computer system and for the editing and verification of the results recorded into the computer system.
Reviews test results to detect clerical errors, significant analytical errors, and unusual laboratory results.
Assists in training new personnel, lower graded personnel, and students from appropriate training programs.
Maintains appropriate levels of supplies and reagents for the efficient operation of the clinical laboratory.
Maintains safety and cleanliness of laboratory.
Works with management to assure laboratory is compliant with the regulatory agency requirements and guidelines.

• A master's degree or two academic years of progressively higher-level graduate education in medical technology or a closely related science.
• Knowledge of clinical laboratory testing policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of laboratory quality control and quality assurance principles.
• Knowledge of laboratory equipment and routine maintenance.
• Ability to accurately perform pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases of testing.

Clinical Laboratory Scientist, GS-11
# Three full years of progressively higher graduate education, a Ph.or an equivalent doctoral degree in medical technology or a related science.

Knowledge of advanced professional clinical laboratory science principles, practices, concepts, and theories supporting independent work.

• Knowledge of laboratory quality control, quality assurance, and performance improvement.
• Skill in informatics, laboratory data flow, and laboratory processes.
• Ability to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair laboratory instrumentation.
• Ability to use independent technical judgment to analyze and interpret laboratory results.
• Ability to communicate, consult, and interact effectively with healthcare team members, external partners, customers, and patients.

Preferred Experience: One(1) year of Microbiology Experience.
The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-11. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-07 to GS-11.
