Registered Nurse Labor and Delivery

Job Summary:


The Registered Nurse in Labor and Delivery provides expert nursing care in a high-risk, high-acuity, and fast-paced environment. This role includes managing patient care throughout labor, delivery, and postpartum phases, including newborn care until transfer to postpartum. The nurse collaborates with multidisciplinary teams and supports mothers and newborns in a unit with a high volume of deliveries, adhering to established clinical guidelines and protocols.

Responsibilities:

• Provide skilled nursing care to laboring and delivering mothers, including high-risk patients.
• Function as a Baby Nurse during delivery and provide continued care to the newborn until transfer to postpartum.
• Perform newborn assessments including eyes, thighs, and administration of Vitamin K injections.
• Circulate in the operating room during deliveries, ensuring patient safety and support.
• Utilize electronic fetal monitoring and EPIC electronic health record systems effectively.
• Float between postpartum, antepartum, and sister facilities supporting mother/baby care as needed.
• Collaborate with midwifery clients, private OBs, adult recovery services, and community care clinics.
• Adhere to staffing and care guidelines set by AWHONN.
• Maintain accurate documentation and communicate patient status clearly to the healthcare team.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in Labor and Delivery with high-risk and high-acuity patient care.
• Current Registered Nurse license with active compact status.
• Proof of required certifications including BLS and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
• Experience with circulating in the OR and newborn care including Vitamin K and eye care.
• Ability to pass clinical review and provide supervisory references.
• Strong skills in electronic fetal monitoring and EPIC electronic health record systems.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
• AWHONN Advanced and Intermediate certifications.
• Experience with heparin, insulin, and magnesium sulfate management.
• Five or more years of high-risk Labor and Delivery experience.

Special Considerations:

• Must be able to work every other weekend and holidays as needed.
• Float capability required to postpartum, antepartum, and sister facilities.
• Pre-approved time off considered on a case-by-case basis.
• Strict screening criteria: candidates without required skills or certifications will not be considered.
• High volume unit averaging 15 patients daily and 500-600 deliveries per month with 31 beds and 4 ORs.

Scheduling:

• Schedule is posted every 6 weeks and designed to meet unit needs.
• Shift assignments include day and night shifts in a fast-paced labor and delivery environment.
