Violence Prevention Program Internship at Santa Clara County Public Health Department

Internship Description/Goals: Support the Violence Prevention Learning to Action Collaborative (50% of time) Research and develop materials for one or more trainings on topics related to public health violence prevention, to be delivered through Collaborative’s scheduled learning sessions. Potential content can include presenting new research, policy recommendation or framework published by government or academic institutions, as a form of knowledge translation. Compile data from feedback surveys and progress reports and draft Year 2 Mid-year Summary. Upload and organize past learning session materials on SharePoint site as a digital library for Learning Collaborative participants. Support with meeting logistics, coordination, and communication tasks. Support the analysis and wrap‑up phase of the We All Play a Role Education Campaign (20% of time) Through document review and staff interviews, develop a report on milestones, successes, challenges, lessons learned, and opportunities for the future. This report will serve as an addendum to the larger evaluation of the campaign. Support Backbone functions of the East San Jose PEACE Partnership (15% of time) Support coordination of the PEACE Partnership’s workgroups through activities such as meeting planning, coordination, communication, and language translation where applicable. Community Outreach: Support the logistics and planning of community outreach events; table at outreach events and engage county residents with violence prevention messaging. Key Competencies Public health violence prevention principles, frameworks, and tools Literature review, knowledge translation, and training development Basic analysis of qualitative and quantitative (survey) data Report writing, data visualization, and presentation Outreach and engagement of institutional and community partners Program planning and evaluation Working in a team, prioritization, and professional communication Understanding of government institutions and functions at a County level Required Experience & Skills Familiarity with Microsoft Office Applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) Strong research, writing, and communication skills Intermediate qualitative and quantitative analysis skills Experience working with community partners through a collective impact approach Strong interpersonal skills Ability to work both in a team and independently General understanding of public health issues and community needs General understanding of racial health equity Quick learner and self‑initiator Desired Skills Experience participating in paid or volunteer work at a community level Experience providing services or conducting outreach in the community Experience working in government or non‑profit settings Ability to read, write, and speak in Spanish or Vietnamese Understanding of public health violence prevention Educational Level Enrolled in Master’s program Field of Study Public Health, Social Work, Youth Development, Community Health, Behavioral Sciences, Psychology, Health Education, Nursing, Medicine, Health Policy, Epidemiology, Political Science, Nutrition, Sociology, or related field Students who have professional or lived experience in settings involving diversity across race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, ability, class, etc., and who have had limited exposure to opportunities in public health are strongly encouraged to apply.
