Payroll Specialist

Phoenix Spirit Group, 2821 N Kerr Ave, Wilmington, North Carolina, United States of America Position Overview PSG is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Payroll Specialist to oversee and execute weekly payroll operations for a growing workforce. This role is responsible for managing high-volume payroll processing, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, and preparing certified payroll reports for applicable projects. Key Responsibilities Process weekly payroll for 8 branches throughout NC & SC that includes 250+ employees with a high degree of accuracy and timeliness Review and validate employee time data, wages, deductions, and tax withholdings Prepare and submit certified payroll reports in compliance with prevailing wage and government contract requirements Ensure full compliance with DOT regulations and payroll-related reporting standards Investigate and resolve payroll discrepancies in coordination with HR, accounting, and operations teams Maintain accurate payroll records and documentation for audit readiness Support internal and external audits by providing required payroll documentation and reporting Monitor payroll processes and recommend improvements for efficiency and accuracy Stay current on payroll laws, tax regulations, and compliance requirements Qualifications 5-7 years of experience in payroll processing, including high-volume payroll environments Proven experience managing payroll within a DOT-regulated environment Strong knowledge of certified payroll reporting and prevailing wage requirements Proficiency with payroll systems and Microsoft Excel Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion Strong problem-solving and communication skills Preferred Qualifications Experience processing multi-state payroll Familiarity with payroll audits and compliance reviews Experience working in construction, transportation, or government contracting environments Why Join PSG?
