Department 10217 Pulmonary Medicine Pay Range $150,000.00 - $450,000.00 The Associate Division Chief of Academic Affairs, Pulmonary Division, coaches individuals (attending physicians, fellows, APPs, Nurses and RCTs) to develop, maintain and execute their strategic career plan and goals in education and research. Provides resources, make connections, and empower individual faculty members and trainees to problem-solve, contribute and organize their educational and research activities. Works closely with the Fellowship Director in establishing and enhancing the training curriculum for fellows in Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine. Ensures that fellows receive adequate supervision in their research and that their SOCs are meeting and reviewing their progress regularly. Serves as a liaison to the Chief of the division about all academic matters. Minimum Education & Work Experience Minimum Education: Medical Doctor (M.D.) from an accredited school with a fellowship in Pediatric Pulmonology from an accredited program (Required). Minimum Work Experience: 5 years academic appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level (Required). Required Skills & Knowledge Knowledge of current principles, methods and procedures for the conduct of scientific research Submit applications for grants or contracts for funding of research projects. Ability to supervise, advice, and train clinical professionals and/or students in basic, translational or clinical research Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards in the conduct of scientific research. Demonstrates a personal commitment to Quality of Care and remains current on the developments and progress in his/her subspecialty. Demonstrates knowledge of and complies with legal and ethical standards for the conduct of scientific research. Previous experience managing program(s) in an academic setting. Required Licenses and Certifications Physician Unrestricted medical license in the District of Columbia and credentialed by the staff of Children's Medical Center Upon Hire (Required) Board Certified in Pediatric Pulmonologist Upon Hire (Required) Commitment to World Class Care Provide clinical and educational services for patients at Children’s Hospital and other approved sites in an ethical, professional and timely manner. Provide oversight of the medical care team educational needs, in conjunction with the chief. Manage direct patient care for a specified patient population; improve continuity of care, customer service and partnerships with community medical providers through timely completion of records and communication. Actively participate in family centered care and communicate in a professional and compassionate manner; refer patients to specialists and to relevant ancillary services as appropriate. Appropriately utilize the defined chain of command and escalation policies. Respond to team members and outside medical providers in a timely and respectful manner; communicate clearly to trainees expectations regarding patient updates and notifications of significant clinical changes, and encourages questions from trainees. Commitment to Advocacy Participate in CNMC’s advocacy initiatives. Contribute scholarly effort to the advancement of public policy to promote population-based pediatric health and well being. Teach patients and families about treatment, prevention, and care enhancement techniques. Participate in specific health promotion, education and/or prevention programs. Contribute scholarly effort to the advancement of public policy that promotes population-based pediatric health and well being. Commitment to Research Conduct research of significant scientific value in the clinical and translational science area(s) relevant to his/her practice specialty. Participate in reviewing manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals. Publish in peer-reviewed, scientific, quality and management journals. Submit applications for grants or contracts for funding of research projects. Participate in research committees, workshop special interest groups, etc. Commitment to Education Participate in CNMC's medical education programs through learning activities with colleagues and trainees. Participate as appropriate in hospital/university –wide educational programs. Participate as appropriate in local, regional and national educational efforts. Provide timely feedback to trainees. Ensure adequate orientation for the care that the trainees deliver. Supervise and train clinical professionals and students effectively. Commitment to Quality & Compliance Follow established bylaws, policies and procedures, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards. Adequately and promptly complete all clinical documentation as required by JCAHO, other regulatory bodies and/or the Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations and Policies and Procedures include complete clinical charge documentation. Identify problems related to patient services and make recommendations for improvement. Cooperate and participate in the development, implementation and revision of policies affecting medical practice, judgment and quality of care; Participate as a member of special care teams, Medical Staff and hospital committees. Review and prepare protocol for use by staff. Evaluate patient care according to adopted protocol and Quality Assurance program criteria. Participate in evaluation of peers and support staff; acknowledge and report medical and/or other errors as well as participate in efforts to prevent them. Strategy Development Develop, in concert with the Center leadership, a divisional vision consistent with the mission of CNMC and a strategic plan to implement that vision. Anticipate future strategic, operational and financial trends and consequences in the marketplace, technology and healthcare innovations. Develop planning scenarios and formulate strategies. Identify and assess all variables that may impact outcomes. Establish standards and monitors the educational performance of the division; develop policies and procedures that are necessary to support the provision of care provided by the Division and the educational outcome/quality goals of CNMC. Help to develop research directions for the Division and its members, in concert with the Center leadership and Chief. Take a leadership role in promoting the activity of the Division to enhance CNMC's academic reputation within the community and, as appropriate, nationally/internationally, and work, in concert with the institution, in marketing of Division activities. Develop the educational activities of the Division, including educational activities specific to the Division and the educational needs of the institution as a whole. This may include intramural as well as regional and national education. Ensure adherence within the Division of the hospital and medical staff bylaws and policies and procedures. Oversee the division’s fellowship program, including resident training. Financial Management Participate in financial planning and budget preparation for educational and fellowship needs. Develop and manage division educational budget to ensure financial stability of the division. Hospital Medicine Division Specific Accountabilities Support faculty academic advancement through promotions planning and support Facilitate promotion dossier compilation Provide advice, information and guidance to any member who is interested in promotion Support division chief in promotion process for faculty Trend and track academic productivity of faculty Facilitate professional connections, networking opportunities and mentorship infrastructure for division members Develop and implement mentorship infrastructure for the division Foster collaborations to improve division scholarly productivity Leverage institutional resources to support academic development for division members Supervise division educational, mentorship and professional development Review and update division standardized faculty development and scholarship annual goals Support faculty in development of annual goals and objectives Oversee division faculty development curriculum Co-facilitate bi-annual division research compendium Facilitate commensality, community and wellness to maintain engagement and faculty vitality Participate in Division Wellness SIG to enhance systems and processes that improve wellbeing Liaise with Provider Well Being Initiative Report to division chief regularly on individual faculty member progress; identify thematic issues, successes, and interests. The disclosed salary range includes the minimum and maximum rates within which Children’s National believes an individual’s base pay rate will fall for this position. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the maximum of the pay range. The exact pay rate for this position will be based on a variety of factors in alignment with the Children’s National compensation philosophy. These factors are legitimate and non-discriminatory including, but not limited to, the current market conditions; organizational needs; the individual’s combination of prior work experience, level of education, knowledge, skills, and other qualifications. This base salary range does not include our comprehensive benefits package or any additional compensation for which this position may be eligible.
