Degree in American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreting, certified ASL Interpreter credentials, and 1+ year of experience as an ASL Interpreter in educational settings. Applicants who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered.
Bring your expertise in American Sign Language to a meaningful setting supporting a high school student requiring communication access. This contract opportunity runs from mid-August through late May with consistent weekday hours, allowing you to collaborate closely with educators in a supportive school environment near Richmond, TX.
You'll be the dedicated interpreter for a 9th-grade student in a behavioral classroom. The student utilizes cochlear implants, hearing aids, and classroom listening devices, and while identifying as hearing, has unique communication needs. Your professional skills will enable him to fully participate during instructional times, empowering him to thrive academically and socially as he transitions back from a Residential Day School Program.
Desired skills and qualifications:
- Current national certification in Sign Language Interpreting (at least 1 of the 4 recognized SLI credentials)
- Proven experience working with children or adolescents in educational or behavioral settings
- Strong proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and understanding of Deaf and Hard of Hearing culture
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, patience, and professionalism in a school setting
- Flexibility and adaptability to individualized student needs and classroom dynamics
Key responsibilities:
- Provide ASL interpretation during instructional periods (approximately 6.5 hours per school day), excluding lunch and transition times
- Facilitate two-way communication between the student, teachers, peers, and school staff
- Support the student’s social-emotional adjustment and successful integration in the classroom environment
- Collaborate with educators and support staff to ensure alignment of instructional goals and accommodations
- Maintain accurate records and participate in IEP or support team meetings as needed
If you’re passionate about bridging communication and making a direct impact on a student's education, we encourage you to submit your resume, completed supervisor reference, proof of licensure, and relevant certification. Step into a role where your skills truly shape a student's daily learning experience—apply today!
