Probation Assistant

ABOUT THE POSITION

Perform basic casework support duties for the Probation Department under the direction of a Deputy Probation Officer. Tasks include assisting with routine casework responsibilities related to hearing, sentencing, and court‑ordered reports.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Para‑professional level; provides on‑the‑job training in basic casework management and works initially under close supervision. This class is non‑sworn and differs from the Deputy Probation Officer I class in that it has a limited scope of full casework duties.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Process and transport clients according to established guidelines. Process fines and other payments ordered by the court and perform follow‑up duties concerning delinquent fines. Conduct drug testing on clients following established procedures and guidelines. Monitor minimal supervision cases and log calls and monthly reports. Prepare and send Failure to Comply notices. Interview defendants at the County Jail and submit written reports to the Court. Interview and process defendants for the Adult Work Program. Type lists, letters, memos, and forms as required; operate standard office equipment. Communicate with personnel from drug and alcohol programs and other agencies to receive and provide information concerning the status of probationers. Communicate with other probation departments regarding background checks on defendants. Maintain related files, records, and statistical reports. Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge: Basic principles affecting human behavior, basic causes of delinquency and crime, and basic interviewing principles and techniques. Ability: Learn and apply principles and practices of probation work, interview diverse populations with tact and confidentiality, apply Federal and State laws, use sound judgement, write clear reports, manage caseloads, use community resources, perform drug testing practices, maintain accurate records, and analyze data using a computer. Minimum Qualifications: Completion of 60 units from an accredited college or university with coursework in psychology, sociology, criminal justice, social work, or another behavioral science; OR Two (2) years of experience in a Probation Department or in roles involving supervision, care, or leadership of juveniles or adults.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

The employee is regularly required to sit, use hands to handle objects, reach with hands and arms, talk or hear, and occasionally stand, walk, kneel, crouch, or lift up to 20 pounds. The work environment normally has moderate noise levels.
