Deputy Sheriff I/II

Under direct supervision, the incumbent will perform law enforcement and crime prevention work, including patrol, investigations, and special assignments ranging from routine to complex tasks. The role also includes duties as a Deputy Coroner, conducting incident investigations, performing identification work, and other related responsibilities.
HIRING INCENTIVE
The Lake County Sheriff's Office offers a $10,000 hiring incentive to employees hired in the permanent Deputy Sheriff I/II classification. The incentive is paid in two installments of $5,000 each: the first is paid in the next available pay period following hire, and the second is paid upon successful completion of probation. Employment Requirement: The employee must remain with the County for at least two (2) years. If the employee does not complete the two-year period, they agree to repay the hiring incentive, which may be deducted from the final paycheck or paid by check within 15 days of termination.DEPUTY SHERIFF I
Licensing and Certifications Current valid California driver’s license. Enrollment in or successful completion of the regular basic law enforcement academy (must be completed before hire). Alternatively, completion of the California POST Basic Course Waiver Process and possession of a valid POST Regular Basic Certificate. Education and Experience Previous professional law enforcement work experience or completion of advanced education in criminal justice is highly desirable. Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four‑year university with major coursework in criminal justice, sociology, psychology, behavioral sciences, or a closely related field is preferred. Responsibilities Patrol assigned areas and respond to incidents. Use investigative and interrogation techniques. Enforce traffic laws, issue citations, and make arrests as necessary. Prepare arrest reports, investigation notes, and incident reports. Gather evidence and obtain statements from witnesses and suspects. Submit findings for court proceedings and testify when required. Conduct accident and death investigations as Deputy Coroner. Assist and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies. Photograph and sketch crime scenes, keep equipment in good condition, and maintain firearms. Perform additional duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Knowledge of modern law‑enforcement methods, traffic control, and investigative procedures. Understanding of apprehension, arrest, and custody laws; rules of evidence and basic criminal law. Familiarity with geography and public relations techniques. Basic first aid, computer proficiency, and written and oral communication skills. Ability to read and interpret laws, perform independent judgments, prepare clear reports, and work under pressure. Maintain physical fitness to meet required standards, operate motor vehicles safely, handle firearms responsibly, and work in varied environments. Effective communication and teamwork capabilities. Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four‑year university with major coursework in criminal justice, sociology, psychology, behavioral sciences, or a closely related field is preferred. Responsibilities Patrol assigned areas and respond to incidents. Use investigative and interrogation methods on patrol. Enforce traffic laws, issue citations, and make arrests. Prepare detailed reports of arrests, investigations, and incidents. Gather evidence and take statements for criminal activity. Conduct accident investigations and function as Deputy Coroner for death cases. Assist and coordinate with other agencies. Photograph and sketch crime scenes, maintain firearms and equipment. Testify in preliminary hearings and trials as required. Initiate and conduct criminal investigations as necessary. Perform additional duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Knowledge of modern law‑enforcement methods, traffic control, and investigative procedures. Familiarity with laws of apprehension, arrest, custody, and rules of evidence. Geographic knowledge of Lake County, public‑relations skills, first aid, and computer proficiency. Ability to interpret laws, conduct independent judgment, record comprehensive reports, and function under pressure. Physical fitness to meet required standards, firearm proficiency, safe vehicle operation, and competency with computerized law‑enforcement systems. Effective communication, customer service, and teamwork. Working Conditions, ADA, and Other Requirements In addition to the duties above, deputies may face extreme temperatures, loud noise, fumes, and other hazardous conditions. Duties may require travel, respond to emergencies outside of regular hours, and work weekends or holidays. Employees will undergo background checks as detailed above.
