Hiring Bonus Police Academy graduates who self-financed their tuition will receive a one-time hiring bonus of $7,000 upon successful completion of the probationary period. Lateral transfers from other agencies will receive a one-time hiring bonus of $20,000 upon successful completion of the probationary period. Assignment Premium Employees regularly assigned to the coastal region or in Covelo are eligible to receive a 5% assignment premium pursuant to current bargaining unit agreements. Primary Responsibilities Patrolling an assigned area to prevent crime and enforce laws and regulations; writing reports; responding to calls for service; performing specialized technical, administrative and investigative assignments; and maintaining order and security in and around the County courts. Key Duties Patrol an assigned area; enforce laws and regulations; maintain law and order within the jurisdiction Respond to radio messages, telephone instructions and citizen requests to appear at scenes of disorder or crime Conduct investigations of major crimes, collect and preserve evidence, interview witnesses, suspects, etc.; arrest suspects; photograph crime scenes; prepare reports Maintain proper courtroom demeanor; enforce rules and regulations pertaining to the use of photography or recording equipment; assist in the control and movement of evidence and exhibits; take charge of the jury during recesses and deliberations Prepare and serve warrants, subpoenas, judicial processes and summonses as required Collect statements from witnesses and physicians for identification and certification of death; investigate human deaths; identify and notify next of kin or appropriate County representative Testify in court in connection with criminal prosecutions Direct traffic, including regulation of vehicle flow, at times of emergency or congestion Stop drivers operating vehicles in violation of laws; issue citations when necessary Perform search and rescue duties Compose and type reports of arrests, investigations, and unusual incidents in accordance with professional standards and department protocol Arrest and/or transport suspects or prisoners to jail or other locations Perform specialized duties such as serving as Personnel Officer, Field Training Officer, Range Master, K‑9 handler, or member of Special Emergency Response Team, hostage negotiations team, or other assigned roles Assist other agencies on special assignments Assist in resolving problems as they arise in the field Assist with crowd control, parade, and riot work Assist with problems of juvenile delinquency Assist in public education programs Perform security and/or custodial duties in the County correctional facility as assigned Enforce Fish and Game laws, policies, and regulations Assist the general public with crime prevention measures whenever possible Attend departmental, training, or other meetings Perform higher level duties in a training capacity Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience: At least 21 years of age with a high school diploma or GED. Licenses and Certifications: Possession of a valid and current regular basic course completion certificate issued by a POST‑certified institution, or successful completion of a POST certification re‑qualification course within the last 18 months; valid Class C driver’s license or better; CPR certificate. Special Requirements: Successful completion of a criminal history background check, fingerprinting, polygraph examination, pre‑employment medical evaluation (physical and psychiatric exams), drug screening, and firearm eligibility. Working Conditions Uniform required; deputies must be ready to be called at any time of day or night, including Sundays and holidays. Shifts and days off are rotated. Uniform Allowance Uniform allowance paid quarterly in a separate bank transfer from payroll. Knowledge of Current law enforcement policies, practices, and methods Applicable state, federal, and local ordinances, laws, rules, and regulations All computer applications and hardware related to job performance Record‑keeping, report preparation, filing methods, and records‑management techniques Skill in Using tact, discretion, initiative, and independent judgment within established guidelines Preparing clear and concise reports, correspondence, and other written materials Training staff in position functions Investigative techniques Organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines, and following assignments with minimal direction Applying logical thinking to solve problems or accomplish tasks; understanding, interpreting, and communicating complicated policies, procedures, and protocols Testifying in court Communicating clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing Mental and Physical Abilities Establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of individuals Analyze situations, identify potential risks or problems, and respond with appropriate, responsible, and effective action Demonstrate an acceptable level of skill and proficiency in the use of firearms Practice defensive tactics Compose clear and concise reports and correspondence Type using a word processor or typewriter at a speed necessary for successful job performance Stand, walk, run, sit, reach, handle machinery/tools, climb, jump, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, speak, hear, and lift or move up to 50 pounds frequently; occasionally lift or move more than 100 pounds The County of Mendocino participates in the E‑Verify program to confirm employment eligibility.
