Special Salary Information The voluntary Reserve Deputy Sheriff‑Lateral (RDS‑Lateral) position receives monetary compensation of $1.00 annually for the performance of their duties. Job Overview The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department – Reserve Forces Detail is comprised of community volunteers who perform the same tasks as full‑time deputies. Reserve Deputies are sworn law enforcement officers, receive the same training and certifications, and are eligible to work in virtually all aspects of the department. Responsibilities Respond to public offenses that pose immediate danger or threat; take appropriate action. Perform administrative and operational duties such as writing reports, maintaining logs, and other records. Maintain current knowledge of policies and procedures affecting the functional area of assignment. Take responsibility for all equipment, including weapons and ammunition, and attend required training. Respond to emergent situations such as natural disasters, civil unrest, or other tactical incidents. Appear in court to testify in legal proceedings. Perform community‑based policing, interact with residents, and engage in collaborative problem‑solving. Conduct collateral duties as assigned. Assignment Types Correctional or Court Facility: Supervise inmate conduct, enforce rules, conduct searches, monitor movements, transport inmates, conduct inmate counts, respond to incidents, provide orientation, oversee attorney rooms, serve as court bailiff, transport inmates. Patrol Station / Specialized Unit: Patrol designated areas, respond to reports of suspected activity, conduct investigations, handle traffic accidents, transport inmates, conduct background investigations, guard station jails. Specialized Duties: Provide technical supervision, conduct training, coordinate operational activities, conduct polygraph investigations, serve in specialized investigative units. High‑Specialized Duties: Conduct major investigations in homicide, arson, fraud; perform helicopter operations or rescue missions where applicable. Selection Requirements Age: Minimum 21 years at time of application. Employment Eligibility: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law. Driver License: Must possess a current, non‑expired California class “C” driver license or above. Experience: One of the following options must be met: Current Level I or Level II reserve peace officer with at least two years of continuous peace officer experience and a current CA P.O.S.T. certificate or POE, or a Reserve Module II academy certificate. Current or former full‑time peace officer with at least two years of continuous experience and a current CA P.O.S.T. certificate, applied within three years of separation. Completed Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department academy within the last three years. Certification: Must have a current CA P.O.S.T. certificate (basic, intermediate, or advanced) or a current California P.O.S.T. certificate, or active Peace Officer status with a P.O.S.T. certificate, or POE. A legible copy of the relevant certificate must be provided. Physical Class Arduous class: involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 lb, bending, twisting, working above ground on irregular surfaces. Positions may demand extraordinary physical activity such as safety roles. Physical Requirements Must be in good general physical condition and free from medical conditions that would interfere with job duties. Vision Acuity – At least 20/70 in each eye without correction; correctable to 20/30. Color perception – no significant impairment. Hearing Maximum hearing loss: ≤35 dB in worse ear; no peak loss >45 dB. Detailed hearing requirements for each frequency are specified in the posting. Work Conditions Available to work week‑long, 24‑hour, duty shifts as required. Must work with individuals of all races, ethnicities, sexes, etc. Ready to respond to potentially hostile, violent, or life‑threatening situations.
