Sheriff's Cadet-Extra Help

Position The current vacancy is within the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office. This extra help position is a semi‑paraprofessional training classification intended to provide experience for persons considering a career in law enforcement. It is not intended for permanent employment. The position may work up to 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 – June 30). No benefits are included. Salary $17.77 – $22.68 per hour (approximate). Responsibilities Support field, records, major crimes, and custody operations by performing a variety of law enforcement clerical and semi‑paraprofessional work. File, maintain logs and worksheets; answer phones and direct calls; provide information; serve subpoenas; transport vehicles to and from locations; perform other duties as assigned. Ideal Candidate Strong desire to pursue a career in law enforcement. Knowledge and Ability Knowledge of basic law enforcement procedures; motor vehicles; city and county streets and addresses; basic grammar and spelling; computer skills and word processing. Ability to interact and communicate effectively and courteously with the public, employees, and other agencies; answer telephones and provide information; read and write; read maps, find addresses, and serve subpoenas. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from high school or equivalent GED certificate. Experience as a Law Enforcement Explorer, a Department of Justice ROP student, or similar is encouraged but not required. Special Requirements Possession of a valid California driver’s license with an acceptable driving record according to the County’s driving policy or ability to acquire one within 10 days of appointment. Uniform: upon initial hire the Sheriff’s Office will issue a shirt, pants, jacket, and name tag; the applicant must provide footwear and belt and maintain the uniform in acceptable condition. All specialized equipment will be provided by the office. Physical Demands and Work Environment Regularly required to use hands, reach, and move objects up to 10 pounds, often up to 50 pounds, and occasionally more than 100 pounds. Frequent standing, sitting, walking, and occasionally climbing or balancing; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; taste or smell; hear, talk, and see (close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and adjust focus). Work outside in weather conditions and exposure to fumes, airborne particles, vibration, and moving mechanical parts; may be near explosives; noise level moderate.
