About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Neuro Med-Surg Acute Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12H Nights Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum of 1 year required License: Must have active state license Certifications: BLS, NIHSS required Must-Have: - Level 1 trauma experience - Previous travel experience (no first-time travelers) - Prior experience working on a dedicated neuro unit Description: The unit consists of 54 beds with 2 semi-private rooms. Nurse to patient ratios are 1:4-5 on day shifts and 1:5-6 on night shifts. Common diagnoses include stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, and other neurological conditions. Nurses are responsible for titrating drips, including heparin titrated based on PTT, and must have heparin drip experience. A charge nurse is present 24/7 who does not take an assignment unless the unit is short-staffed to maintain nurse ratios. A house supervisor is also available 24/7. Patient care techs are available, with ratios of 1:9-10 during the day and evening, and 1:10-12 at night. Nurses may troubleshoot respiratory equipment, primarily handling stable COVID patients. Telemetry monitors are used throughout the unit, and nurses are not required to read telemetry strips. Nurses work 12-hour shifts and are expected to work every other weekend and every other holiday. There is no on-call requirement. Nurses may float to general units and will only perform skills for which they are competent, under the guidance of a trained nurse. There is no specific scrub color requirement, but tattoos must be covered while on duty and piercings are limited to ears only. Orientation includes two days of training with an educator and a preceptor while caring for patients.
