RN Post-Anesthesia Care Unit Nurse

Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) is responsible for providing specialized nursing care to patients pre-operatively, during Phase I and Phase II recovery following surgery. This role requires advanced knowledge of anesthesiology, critical care skills to monitor patient stability, and the ability to assess incision sites and vital signs. The nurse collaborates closely with the healthcare team to ensure patient safety and optimal recovery outcomes. Responsibilities:

• Provide skilled nursing care to patients in pre-operative, Phase I, and Phase II post-anesthesia recovery stages.
• Monitor and assess patients' vital signs, incision sites, body temperature, and other indicators of stability or complications.
• Utilize specialized equipment such as Meditech, PCA Pumps, Pyxis, Braun IV Pumps, Cryocuff, SCD's, Bair PAWS Warmers, HP Monitors, and Phillips Monitors.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to develop and implement individualized patient care plans.
• Respond promptly to emergencies and changes in patient condition.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient care and progress.
• Adhere to infection control policies and safety protocols.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Minimum of 2 years' experience as a critical care Registered Nurse (ER, ICU) or PACU nurse in a hospital setting.
• Active Registered Nurse license valid in the state of Hawaii.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications from the American Heart Association.
• Strong critical thinking and patient assessment skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced surgical recovery environment.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification from the American Heart Association.
• Specialty-related certifications such as National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) and Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC).
• Experience with Meditech electronic medical record system and related clinical equipment.

Special Considerations:

• Must obtain and maintain an active Hawaii RN license prior to assignment start.
• Proof of flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required before contract start date.
• On-call shifts required 0-3 times per month, including 8-hour night and 24-hour weekend/holiday coverage.
• Work environment includes Acute Surgical Unit (ASU) and PACU settings.

Scheduling:

• Shifts vary between 8, 10, and 12 hours.
• Work hours may include days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
• No guarantee of shift preference or hours; scheduling is variable based on unit needs.
