What You’ll Do Lead full-cycle US payroll operations for a multi-state employee population, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant payroll delivery across federal, state, and local requirements. Manage payroll timelines, project plans, priorities, and deliverables across recurring cycles, year-end activities, audits, system changes, and process improvements. Serve as a primary point of contact for complex payroll matters (employee inquiries, provider questions, calculations, tax matters, stock transactions, off-cycle payments, garnishments, benefits-related payroll activity, and escalations). Review, reconcile, audit, and approve payroll transactions, analytics, journal entries, month-end accruals, balance sheet reconciliations, and related explanations. Collaborate with People Operations, Equity, Benefits, Accounting, Finance, Legal, external providers, and business stakeholders to ensure scalable, well-controlled payroll processes. Lead or support payroll compliance activities, including multi-state tax withholding, 401(k)/Roth contributions, workers’ compensation, external audits, SOX controls, and other recurring requirements. Perform regular tax reviews to ensure agency compliance and maintain strong internal controls and checklists. Ensure accurate tax rates setup with ADP/Workday; review and reconcile SUI, FUTA, amended returns, W-2s, and year-end deliverables. Coordinate with ADP and Payroll Accounting to research, trace, and resolve out-of-balance tax items and timely resolutions. Identify and implement payroll process and system improvements, including documenting current-state processes, evaluating dependencies, performing UAT, and coordinating implementation with providers and stakeholders. Monitor changes in payroll legislation and company policies; assess impact and advise on compliance and process effectiveness. Prepare, review, and deliver standard and ad hoc payroll reporting for internal stakeholders (Finance, Accounting, Legal, Equity, Benefits, People Operations, and business units). Provide guidance and coaching to payroll team members and cross-functional partners to support strong execution and continuous learning. Foster effective cross-functional communication, monitor milestones, identify risks, and take action to keep payroll initiatives on track. Apply sound judgment and analytical thinking to resolve complex payroll issues in a collaborative environment. Promote belonging, trust, and strong cross-functional relationships with a company-wide perspective. Who You Are 5+ years of relevant payroll, accounting, finance, or related experience with multi-state US payroll; international payroll experience is a plus. 2+ years in a role with similar scope (leading payroll projects, owning programs, managing complex processes, or serving as escalation point). Deep knowledge of payroll operations, calculations, compliance, taxation, benefits-related payroll activity, analytics, equity-related payroll, audits, SOX controls, and month-end close support. Experience processing or overseeing payroll for large populations across multiple states or jurisdictions. Strong program management skills with the ability to manage timelines, dependencies, risks, and stakeholder alignment. Experience with Workday HRIS/payroll systems; understanding of configuration, data flows, integrations, testing, and implementation impacts. Analytical, research, problem-solving, and evaluative thinking skills with a data-driven approach to root cause analysis and process improvements. High attention to detail and strong organizational skills; able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Excellent written and verbal communication, able to explain complex payroll matters clearly to employees, leaders, and cross-functional partners. Discretion with sensitive information and sound judgment. Growth mindset, openness to feedback, and a commitment to continuous improvement. BA/BS in Accounting, Finance, Business, Human Resources, or related field, or equivalent practical experience. Public company experience is a plus.
