Investigative Law Attorney

Overview The FBI's Office of the General Counsel (OGC) seeks highly qualified attorneys to join its legal practice. OGC provides legal advice to the FBI, including the Director, headquarters officials, and agents in field offices and operations. Mission Protect the American People and uphold the Constitution of the United States. Investigative Law Unit (ILU) ILU supports the FBI’s national priorities by providing legal and policy advice concerning criminal investigative jurisdiction, operations, and techniques. The General Attorney will provide legal advice and counsel to the assigned client group and executive management, and work as part of the ILU team to address overarching legal issues affecting FBI HQ and the field. Responsibilities Consult and provide legal guidance on operational and criminal law issues. Provide prompt and thorough advice to field office Chief Division Counsels. Participate in the policy process to address legal equities and risks. Draft memos and decisional papers for executive management. Brief OGC executive management on legal issues arising from operational clients. Qualifications Must be a U.S. citizen. Must be able to obtain a Top‑Secret/SCI clearance. Must possess a Juris Doctor from an accredited American Bar Association law school. Active membership in a U.S. jurisdiction bar association. GS‑14: minimum 2.5 years post‑J.D. attorney experience. GS‑15: minimum 4 years post‑J.D. attorney experience. Eligibility Requirements Proof of a J.D. degree and bar membership must be provided. Candidates must meet security and background check requirements. Veterans Preference is considered as a positive factor. Salary GS‑14: $132,368 – $172,075 per year; GS‑15: $155,700 – $183,500 per year. Travel Some travel is required.
