Position Urban Forestry Unit, Parks and Environment Division — Parks Arboriculturist (Tree Planting & Capital Improvement Projects Supervisor). This full‑time role plans and supervises the planting and maintenance of trees on Parks’ owned properties. The Arboriculturist acts as a technical expert in planting, care and maintenance of trees in the urban landscape and oversees related projects and staff. Responsibilities Supervise, plan and direct the work of the tree planting crew (3 crew members and 1 Field Lead) in tree planting, summer watering and young tree care operations. Serve as the technical expert for planting, care and maintenance of trees and plant materials. Develop and implement a comprehensive tree planting program in developed parks, including specifications and contractor recommendations for young tree watering. Monitor the work of in‑house crews and contractors for compliance; inspect young tree plantings and conduct field surveys. Respond to public inquiries and complaints related to tree planting and work orders. Coordinate with other departments to provide services for planting or removing trees and stumps. Support tree inspections and appraise the value of trees when needed. Develop and manage project budgets for tree acquisition and maintenance. Order and inspect young tree materials for planting; maintain inventory of trees on parks properties. Plan and conduct training for staff and/or the public on care, installation and maintenance of trees and plantings. Lead interdepartmental or internal events related to tree planting; coordinate annual tree plantings with internal and external stakeholders. Review CIP design and construction plans; attend Proview meetings to provide technical input for tree standards and code compliance; attend CIP site meetings and inspect tree conditions. Prepare and review reports on section activities; perform other related duties as assigned; may assist with tree inspections during storms or emergencies. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Requires a minimum of three years of experience in the care, planting and maintenance of trees and plant materials, and a Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, Forestry, Natural Resources, Botany or related field with demonstrated supervisory or lead experience (or equivalent combination of education, training and experience). A valid Washington State driver’s license is required. Desired Qualifications ISA Certified Arborist ISA Tree Risk Assessor Qualified Experience in plant appraisal methods Experience in arborist reports, plant appraisals and tree risk evaluations; experience in tree inventories Knowledge of best management practices for arboriculture and current industry standards Knowledge of industry‑standard tree protection during construction projects Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools and ARCGIS Strong communication skills for engaging the public via email, reports and public events Work Environment/Physical Demands Required to work in all weather conditions; able to stand, bend and walk for extended periods. Occasional exposure to toxic chemicals and pesticides is required.
