Teacher Consultant - Early Childhood Special Education Beginning 2026-27 School Year Starting Date: Aug 17, 2026 Job Description Job Goal(s): The primary job goals of the Early Childhood Teacher Consultant are: Provide direct service and consultative support to ensure timely and appropriate special education services for preschool age students in inclusive environments. Provide consultative support to general education preschool staff on the development and implementation of targeted interventions for students at risk. Conduct assessments and evaluations to determine eligibility for special education programs and services. Location of Work: Special Services Building, 701 South Paw Paw Street, Lawrence, MI 49064 Qualifications Master’s degree in education or a related field — required. Valid Michigan teaching certificate with an Early Childhood Special Education endorsement — required. Previous experience supporting the development of preschool-age children – required; experience providing consultative services preferred. Strong consultation and coaching skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Working knowledge of research‑supported positive behavior supports (individual and classroom levels). Effective classroom management strategies. Evidence‑based instructional practices for language, social‑emotional, sensorimotor development and early learning skills. Knowledge of curriculum and assessment measures used by GSRP and Head Start programs. Knowledge of IDEA and Michigan regulations. Essential Job Functions Provide direct and consultative services to students with IEPs placed in general education environments in accordance with their Individualized Education Program. Coordinate transitions with all relevant providers, including from Early Intervention to Preschool, between Preschool Programs, and from Preschool to Kindergarten settings. Collaborate effectively with Head Start, GSRP, and community‑based preschool staff to support students needing targeted intervention. Lead or assist in assessing and planning for students’ developmental, social‑emotional, sensorimotor and early learning needs, particularly during transition planning. Recommend appropriate assistive technology to support instructional needs. Assist with transitioning preschool students into local districts when eligible for kindergarten. Assist families with understanding child development, identifying developmentally appropriate expectations, and understanding the child’s delay or disability. Provide positive behavior support to students in group and individual settings. Serve as an IEP team member and chair IEP meetings. Communicate with parents, agencies, and other student support systems. Maintain professional and timely communication with parents, staff, agencies, and others. Stay up to date with best practices, research, and trends in early childhood and early intervention services. Adhere to Van Buren ISD policies and procedures. Complete assigned responsibilities within established timelines. Perform additional tasks, responsibilities, and duties as assigned by the Early Childhood Special Education Supervisor.
