Because our backlog continues to grow and the energy market transformation is accelerating demand for our engineering expertise, we are seeking a Mechanical SME/Principal Engineer to join our Nashville office. As a Principal SME/Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for providing technical and operational guidance and training/mentoring of our design resources across all mechanical engineering work. You will assist the Business Unit Manager and Service Line Leader in developing and implementing growth strategies, provide technical guidance to clients, and work with interdisciplinary teams to deliver full-range services. This role reports to the Business Unit Manager. Responsibilities Grow, mentor, and develop the mechanical staff to achieve maximum potential. Ensure Mechanical discipline managers provide timely and adequate guidance and quality oversight, including code review, of all project work involving mechanical engineering. Serve as technical interface with code officials and contractors. Provide technical training and development of staff related to mechanical engineering. Act as Engineer of Record on select projects as needed. Guide and mentor Mechanical discipline managers in staff development and technical training. Lead development of Mechanical standards, practices, guidelines, and specifications, coordinating across offices with the Chief Engineer. Ensure consistent application of corporate quality management processes and procedures. Active member/leader of local and national technical organizations (e.g., ASHRAE) and present at conferences as an industry thought leader. Recruit and develop technical staff and project managers to deliver project commitments. Provide on-the-spot advice and decisions – technical and cost estimates – as the top mechanical engineer in an office. Consult with clients on project goals, design concepts, solutions, and economics. Evaluate project opportunities and make go/no‑go determinations based on technical qualifications, resource availability, and alignment with business strategy. Coordinate with client/project managers and department managers to resolve mechanical engineering conflicts. Consult with senior leadership on development and implementation of growth strategies. Assist the Office/Business Unit Manager to ensure successful office operations, including staff organizational structure and office procedures. Supervise all Mechanical discipline managers within an office or business unit for efficient intra‑office operations. Assist the Chief Engineer in leading the MEPS Service Line's Mechanical community of practice and performing delegated tasks from the Chief. Required Skills & Experience Accomplished mechanical engineer/PE with 20+ years of progressive technical experience in the design of mechanical systems, thermal energy infrastructure, and renewable energy technologies. Experience in technical oversight of multiple projects, meeting contract specifications and achieving high-performance outcomes. Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
