Trial Attorney - LGBTQ+ Liaison - CAFL Transition Age Youth Office

Position Overview We are seeking Trial Attorneys for our Transition Age Youth Office within the Children and Family Law Division. The office provides direct representation to transition‑age youth (14‑22 years) and their siblings, conducts case support for care and protection, children requiring assistance, and permanency for young adult cases. Attorneys also offer training and consultation to attorneys and social workers across the state and support LGBTQ+ youth representation. Minimum Entry Requirements Eligible to practice law in Massachusetts (member of the Massachusetts bar in good standing or of another jurisdiction eligible for limited Massachusetts practice under SJC Rule 3:04). Access to an automobile for travel to courts and client sites. Access to a personal computer with reliable home internet for remote work. Qualifications / Skills Trial experience in termination of parental rights cases or substantial experience working with adolescents or young adults. Demonstrated commitment to zealous advocacy for indigent persons. Experience in LGBTQ+ youth representation and a commitment to improving such representation. Strong interpersonal and analytical skills. Foreign language skills desirable. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a community‑focused environment. Responsibilities Visiting and interviewing adolescents, young adults, and their sibling clients. Pre‑trial investigation and discovery, including locating and interviewing witnesses, reviewing evidence, and consulting experts. Legal research and writing, including preparing papers for national conferences. Advocating through the internal DCF administrative processes. Representing clients in pre‑trial proceedings, hearings, trials, and interlocutory appeals. Advocating with DCF and other providers for appropriate services for clients and family members. Coordinating advocacy with CPCS, CAFL, and FJA social work staff. Providing direct support to child welfare attorneys through case support, assistance requests, and regionally based training. Training FJA staff and others on the representation of LGBTA+ youth. Advising and consulting with FJA and CAFL private panel attorneys on cases involving LGBTQ+ youth. Assisting with the creation of annual training plans for young adult and transition‑age youth advocacy programs. Participating in state and local coalitions to drive policy reform. Maintaining strong relationships with the Juvenile Court, Probation, DYS, DCF, DESE, community agencies, and other stakeholders. Other duties as assigned.
