POSITION SUMMARY


The Expanded Learning Time (ELT) High School Student Intern works alongside the Explorers' Group Leader by providing support with the delivery of engaging and academically enriching activities for Framingham Public Schools students in grades K-5. ELT High School Interns assist the group leader in facilitating high-quality project-based learning activities during before and after-school programming, while supporting the healthy social and emotional development of all students. This role is essential to Framingham Public Schools' day-to-day operations and strategic goal of fostering the development of the "whole child" by supporting academic, social-emotional, and mental health needs. This commitment aligns with Framingham Public Schools' high expectations for achievement, equal access to quality instruction, academic proficiency for all students, and closing the achievement gap among subgroups within the schools.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE


Framingham Public Schools seeks candidates whose background, teaching, or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and belonging in all aspects of education.
  • Educational Requirement: Current enrollment in high school.
  • Professional Experience: Previous experience in an academic, recreational, or athletic youth setting is preferred but not required. A strong passion and interest in working with children is essential.
  • Knowledge Base: Basic alignment with positive youth development principles. Proven interest in working with children and adults from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds.
  • Language Proficiency: Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and/or Portuguese is preferred.

  6. Adaptability: Capacity to respond flexibly to multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic, and complex working environment.
  7. Continuous Growth: Ability to receive constructive feedback and a strong willingness to learn new skills to meet the evolving needs of students and families.
  8. Technology Integration: Familiarity with Google Suite and other instructional or administrative technologies as required by the program.
  9. Logistical Reliability: Possess reliable transportation to fulfill scheduling requirements across district sites.
  10. Cultural Proficiency: Demonstrated cultural proficiency and competence in fostering an equitable and inclusive district environment for all staff, students, and families.
  11. Professionalism & Composure: Maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance; exhibit professionalism in responding to high-stakes or unpredictable classroom situations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

I. Planning, Preparation, and Instruction
  • Assists with facilitating an academically enriching Out-of-School Time curriculum and recreation program in active collaboration with the ELT Group Leader.
  • Inspires elementary school students to set and achieve ambitious academic and personal goals.
  • Helps integrate inclusive instructional methods that support the full participation of students with special needs and multilingual learners.
II. Classroom Environment and Management

  • Maintains a safe, supportive, and culturally responsive environment for all students that honors identity and fosters social-emotional growth.
  • Assists with classroom management, establishes proactive routines, and utilizes restorative justice techniques to manage behavior and resolve peer conflicts constructively.
  • Supports the group leader to ensure appropriate supervision of all assigned students at all times, upholding the highest standards of safety.
  • Models exemplary professional behavior in alignment with Framingham Public Schools core values.
III. Assessment, Operations, and Data-Informed Practice

  • Supports daily operational procedures, including managing program materials and the distribution of snacks.
  • Assists with the logistical coordination of seamless student transitions, drop-off, and pick-up procedures.
  • Responds to and assists with the documentation of emergency situations, injuries, and incidents in strict alignment with EEC and district regulations.
IV. Communication and Collaboration

  • Coordinates closely with the Group Leader, Site Coordinator, and multidisciplinary teams to support holistic student growth.
  • Builds positive and appropriate relationships with students, colleagues, and program supervisors.
  • Attends and actively supports family engagement activities and designated special program events as needed.
V. Professional Responsibilities and Development

  • Commits to ongoing training, staying current with evidence-based youth development practices and safety protocols.
  • Completes the mandatory Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) Background Record Check (BRC) in compliance with federal law.
  • Completes the mandatory EEC Essentials 2.0 training course prior to working with children, and fulfills the annual refresher training package requirements as applicable.
V. Professional Responsibilities and Development

  • Commits to ongoing professional development, staying current with evidence-based youth development practices and safety protocols.
  • Completes the mandatory Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) Background Record Check (BRC) in compliance with federal law for Elementary and Pre-K programming.

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

  1. Mobility, Navigation & Travel: Must move about and traverse throughout the school building and grounds; requires the ability to navigate effectively throughout classrooms, cafeterias, and playgrounds for supervision and instruction.
  2. Stationary Tasks: Often remains in a stationary position for considerable periods of time for instructional delivery, administrative tasks, and meetings.
  3. Sensory Requirements: Must be able to see and hear continuously to ensure student safety, monitor classroom operations, and provide instruction in active school environments.
  4. Communication: Must communicate effectively and clearly with students, parents, and district personnel in person, via email, and on the telephone or video conference.
  5. Manual Dexterity & Technology: Frequent use of hands to finger, handle, or feel. Must be able to operate a computer, input data, and utilize instructional technology and office productivity machinery continuously throughout the day.
  6. General Physical Strength: Ability to lift, move, and position classroom materials and equipment (up to 30 lbs) such as books, supplies, and bulk student devices.
  7. Working Environment: Must be able to adapt to dynamic, higher-noise school environments during classroom instruction, recess, and observations.
  8. Interaction & Focus: Must interact routinely with diverse stakeholders, meet multiple high-level demands simultaneously, and maintain focus on student needs amid frequent interruptions.
  9. School Environment Exposure: Ability to navigate and function effectively within diverse school settings, including classrooms, cafeterias, and playgrounds, which involve varying noise levels and high-activity environments.
  10. Behavioral De-escalation & Resilience: Capacity to remain calm and professional when exposed to student behavioral challenges or high-stakes emotional situations; ability to model and apply de-escalation techniques as needed.

  • The performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the Framingham School Commitee Contract.
FAIR LABOR STANDARDS ACT (FLSA) CLASSIFICATION
  • This position is classified as Non-Exempt (Hourly).
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Covered under Framingham School Committee Contract
  • Work Year: 180 days (Ten-Months)
  • Must be available a minimum of 2 days/week.
  • The District reserves the right to transfer personnel as needed.

  • Elementary Program Schedule

    • AM Program: 7:00 am - 9:00 am (King, Stapleton, Barbieri, Brophy, Potter Road, Hemenway, Harmony Grove, Dunning) or 7:00 am - 8:00 am (McCarthy
    • PM Program: 3:00 pm - 5:30 pm* (King, Stapleton, Barbieri, Brophy, Potter Road, Hemenway, Harmony Grove, Dunning) or 2:00 pm - 5:30 pm* (McCarthy).
    Secondary Program Schedule
    • 2:15 pm - 5:00 pm
