An Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon (OMS) within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health system plays a vital role in diagnosing, surgically treating, and managing conditions affecting the oral and maxillofacial area. The responsibilities are specifically designed for the VA environment and generally encompass the following:

• Patient Care and Surgical Procedures

  • Assess and diagnose issues related to the mouth, jaws, face, and neck.

  • Conduct surgical interventions such as:

    • Extraction of teeth, including impacted wisdom teeth.

    • Surgical treatment of maxillofacial injuries (fractures, lacerations).

    • Management of oral pathologies (tumors, cysts).

    • Pre-prosthetic surgeries for dental restoration.

  • Oversee patients with intricate medical histories and offer consultative services.

• Interdisciplinary Collaboration

  • Collaborate closely with other healthcare professionals (ENT, oncology, prosthodontics, anesthesiology, etc.) to deliver comprehensive, multidisciplinary care to veteran patients.

• Administrative Responsibilities

  • Accurately document patient interactions in the VA's electronic health record (EHR).

  • Engage in departmental meetings, credentialing, and quality assurance initiatives.

  • Ensure compliance with VA policies and regulatory standards.

• Education and Training

  • Provide training and oversight to dental residents, medical students, and other healthcare personnel if associated with an educational program.

  • Participate in ongoing medical/dental education to maintain surgical skills.

• Veteran-Centric Care

  • Address the specific needs of veterans, including complex medical conditions, PTSD, or trauma histories.

  • Advocate for veteran access to oral and maxillofacial surgical services.

• Emergency and On-Call Coverage

  • Respond to urgent cases involving severe infections or other critical conditions.

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM
