Roosevelt High - Special Education Assistant 1-1 (Distinct) - 1.0 FTE

Overview of Position This is an one‑on‑one position assigned to support a student in the distinct service pathway. To learn more about our special education service pathways, please follow this link to the SPS Special Education Department website: Essential Functions Adapts, under the direction of the teacher, classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials to provide an opportunity for all special education students to participate in classroom activities. Administers a variety of materials and assignments (e.g., tests, homework, graded papers, folders) to assist the teacher in evaluating students’ progress and organizing individual student needs. Provides first aid and medical assistance as required to care for injured children. Supports students with personal care needs related to medical conditions or physical limitations to allow them to function in the school environment. Attends meetings and in‑service presentations (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures) for the purpose of acquiring and conveying information related to job functions. Confers with teacher(s) on a regular basis to assist in evaluating special education student progress and implementing IEP objectives. Liaises with teachers and/or parents via phone, e‑mail, or parent‑teacher meetings to provide information related to the student’s progress as set in the individual educational program. Directs and implements behavioral plans for students with behavior disorders or other conditions to assist in meeting special education students’ needs, protect safety, and provide a consistent environment. Instructs students in a variety of activities in individual and group settings (e.g., academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills) to reinforce instructional objectives and implement remediation plans aligned with individual educational program goals. Maintains instructional materials and/or student files/records (e.g., adapting instructional materials, checking papers, attendance, setting up adapted projects) to ensure availability of items and reliable information. Monitors students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments (e.g., rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots) to aid students and provide a safe and positive learning environment. Other Functions Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit. Reporting Relationships Reports to the building principal if assigned through staffing formulas. If based centrally, reports to the assigned Special Education Supervisor. Required Knowledge Required to perform basic math, read manuals, write documents, and understand complex, multi‑step written and oral instructions. Instructional procedures and practices Age‑appropriate student activities Safety practices and procedures Conflict resolution Stages of child development / behavior Required Skills Perform multiple, non‑technical tasks with potential need to upgrade skills to meet changing job conditions. Adhering to safety practices Operating standard office equipment, including related software applications Preparing and maintaining accurate records Required Abilities Gather and collate data; use job‑related equipment. Flexibility to work with others in a variety of circumstances and to operate equipment using standardized methods. Work with a wide diversity of individuals, handling data with defined processes. Problem‑solving to identify issues and create action plans. Adapting to changing work priorities, communicating with diverse groups, maintaining confidentiality, working as part of a team, and managing constant interruptions. Typing and basic computer use. Potential ability to perform basic signing. Responsibilities Work under direct supervision using standardized procedures; lead, guide, and/or coordinate others; and operate within a defined budget. Working Environment Physical demands include seldom lifting up to 50 lbs, carrying, pushing, climbing, and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling; significant fine finger dexterity. May need to handle medically fragile children and assist with toileting, diaper changing, tube feeding, and menstruation support. Job requires roughly 45% sitting, 25% walking, and 30% standing in a clean and healthy environment. Education and Experience Typical Qualifications: high‑school diploma or equivalent and at least one of the following: A qualifying score on the Education Testing Service paraeducator assessment as published by PESB; An associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university; Seventy‑two quarter credits or forty‑eight semester credits at the one‑hundred level or higher at an accredited college or university; An apprenticeship as a paraeducator in a program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council. Years of relevant experience: None specified. Preferred experience: Experience working with children. Certificates & Licenses Valid State of Washington Driver’s License or evidence of equivalent mobility. Continuing Education / Training Secure Training, CPR, First Aid. Clearances Criminal Justice Fingerprint Background Clearance.
