Elementary School Teacher

Teach pupils at the elementary level basic academic, social, and other formative skills in keeping with the school's Catholic character and Gospel values. Reports to Principal. Tasks/Responsibilities for "Elementary School Teacher" include establishing and enforcing rules and procedures to maintain order among students, observing and evaluating students' performance, behavior, social development, and physical health, preparing materials and classrooms for class activities, adapting teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests, planning and conducting activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time, instructing students individually and in groups, establishing clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, assigning and grading classwork and homework, reading books to entire classes or small groups, preparing, administering, and grading tests and assignments, conferring with parents or guardians, teachers, counselors, and administrators to resolve students' behavioral and academic problems, meeting with parents and guardians to discuss their children's progress, maintaining accurate and complete student records, preparing students for later grades, guiding and counseling students with adjustment and/or academic problems, preparing and implementing remedial programs for students requiring extra help, preparing objectives and outlines for courses of study, providing a variety of materials and resources for children to explore, enforcing administration policies and rules governing students, conferring with other staff members to plan and schedule lessons, meeting with other professionals to discuss individual students' needs and progress, using computers, audiovisual aids, and other equipment and materials to supplement presentations, preparing for assigned classes, collaborating with other teachers and administrators to develop, evaluate, and revise elementary school programs, preparing reports on students and activities, instructing and monitoring students in the use and care of equipment and materials, organizing and leading activities designed to promote physical, mental, and social development, planning and supervising class projects, field trips, guest speaker visits, and other experiential activities, organizing and labeling materials, displaying students' work, attending staff meetings, serving on committees, administering standardized ability and achievement tests, supervising, evaluating, and planning assignments for teacher assistants and volunteers, involving parent volunteers and older students in children's activities, performing administrative duties, selecting, storing, ordering, issuing, and inventorying classroom equipment, materials, and supplies, providing disabled students with assistive devices, supportive technology, and assistance accessing facilities, sponsoring extracurricular activities, preparing and supervising students for Mass and other sacramental preparation.

Abilities Needed for "Elementary School Teacher" include oral expression, problem sensitivity, oral comprehension, speech clarity, speech recognition, written comprehension, written expression, fluency of ideas, deductive reasoning, inductive reasoning, information ordering, originality, near vision, selective attention, category flexibility, flexibility of closure.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements include sitting and standing for extended periods, meeting all technological requirements for classroom management, hearing and understanding speech at normal classroom levels and in an outdoor environment, speaking in an audible tone, lifting up to 25 pounds, bending, stooping, climbing stairs, and reaching overhead.

Work Environment is normally performed in a school/classroom environment, occasionally on field trips away from school, with a usually moderate noise level.

Minimum Qualifications include a Bachelor's degree or higher, preferably in education or a related field, an active teaching certification, ability to communicate effectively, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, compliance with PA State clearance requirements, and being a Catholic in good standing if teaching religion, otherwise respect for the Catholic Church and basic morality guidelines.
