Our goal is to provide a positive, engaging, safe, and nurturing environment that allows children to gain an appreciation of learning. The City of Aurora is seeking a dynamic, energetic individual to lead the Preschool Program at one of our centers. Primary Duties & Responsibilities Develop, schedule, coordinate and implement preschool programs. Maintain and enforce all documents, records and requirements to meet regulations of the Colorado Department of Early Childhood, Arapahoe County Health Department, Aurora Fire, Nurse Consultant, city of Aurora, Colorado Shines, and other designated regulatory agencies. Supervise the program site; schedule and oversee activities of preschool staff and/or volunteers. Market to increase and maintain targeted enrollment for the preschool programs. Teach in the classroom as assigned or for coverage needs. Develop and attend promotional and marketing activities. Analyze, propose, and modify preschool programming and budget to sustain target enrollments and program profitability. Manage day‑to‑day operations of the Preschool Program, including fiscal management, hiring, overseeing and evaluating staff. Oversee and handle situations with staff, children and adults in a professional and effective manner. Perform administrative tasks such as purchasing, making budget recommendations, maintaining records of expenditures, and cash handling. Build collaborative relationships with all programs within the City of Aurora and work with other agencies such as the Universal Preschool Program, local preschool councils, and Colorado Shines. Coordinate and schedule facility usage as needed. Monitor maintenance of assigned equipment or facilities. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications & Working Conditions Education Meet the education and experience guidelines for a Large Child Care Center Director as outlined in the Colorado Department of Early Childhood Rules and Regulations 7.702.43. Large center directors must have a current director qualifications letter issued by the Department or a current Early Childhood Professional Credential level III or higher in version 3.0. Educational requirements may be met by: Completion of a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in one of the following areas: Child Development Child Psychology Early Childhood Education Early Childhood Special Education Educational Leadership & Administration Elementary Education Family & Human Development Family Studies Special Education Completion of three semester credit hour courses in each of the following areas: Introduction to Early Childhood Professions Introduction to Early Childhood Techniques Guidance Strategies for Young Children or Colorado Pyramid Model Training certificate of completion Health, Nutrition & Safety Administration of Early Childhood Care & Education Programs Administration: Human Relations for Early Childhood Professions or Introduction to Business Curriculum Development: Methods & Techniques Child Growth & Development The Exceptional Child Infant/Toddler Theory & Practice or Expanding Quality Infant/Toddler Training certificate of completion Completion of a course of training approved by the Department that includes content listed in Section 7.703.43, B, 1, and experience listed in Section 7.702.43, C. Experience Direct work with young children and families within an early care and education setting, verified by the amount of work experience required for a Large Center Director. Amounts of verified experience depend on educational credentials: No additional experience required for individuals with a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctorate degree with a major emphasis as listed or with an Early Childhood Professional Credential Level II. Three months (455 hours) required for those with an Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development. Three months (455 hours) required for those with a Bachelor’s degree and the specified thirty semester credit hours. Six months (910 hours) required for those with no degree but the specified thirty semester credit hours. Additional requirements: Verified experience in a school-age childcare center may count for up to half of the required experience; the other half must be working directly with children in a child development program. For family childcare home experience, the applicant must have been the licensee in the State of Colorado. At least two years of progressively responsible experience working directly with children in a child development program. One year of preschool supervisory experience. Experience working directly with diverse populations. Racially conscious and culturally competent with the capacity for continuous improvement. Conflict resolution and mediation expertise. Decision‑making proficiencies. Budget oversight experience (revenues and expenses). Preferred Qualifications Experience with Colorado Shines, Universal Preschool Program, registration and/or child care management software, TS GOLD and Workday. Knowledge Business Administration: oversee budgets and balance revenues and expenses. Programming, implementing and marketing preschool programs. Child development and appropriate administrative practices. Effective classroom management and positive guidance techniques. Standard computer operations, including Word, Excel and presentations. FERPA & HIPAA guidelines. Colorado Early Learning and Development Guidelines. Governing rules and regulations (Office of Early Childhood, local health department, Colorado Shines, etc.). Skills Outstanding customer service skills and ability to work with diverse groups. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals. Public relations skills and techniques. Strong organization, management, communication, crisis management, interpersonal and planning skills. Proficient Windows‑based computer skills. Abilities Express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; prepare reports, correspondence, and projects. Speak effectively before groups of customers or employees. Work independently and use judgment when making decisions. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, the public and other agencies. Effective problem‑solving skills; enforce safety practices and procedures for emergency and non‑emergency situations; follow written and verbal instructions. Facilitate resolution of conflicts and make sound decisions. Handle sensitive or stressful situations with tact and diplomacy. Motivate staff and create a positive work environment. Licenses And Certifications Required Provide a copy of your Director’s certification and Early Childhood Professional Credential v3.0 for verification of meeting all requirements for a Large Center Director. Current Driver’s License. Meet appropriate Large Center Director requirements/qualifications and provide all documentation as required by the Colorado Department of Early Childhood upon hire, including: CBI & FBI Criminal Background checks. Child Abuse and Neglect (TRAILS) check. Current Colorado Large Center Director qualification letter and current Early Childhood Professional Credential Level III or higher (3.0 version). Multi‑hazard Planning for Childcare Disaster Preparedness Training through FEMA. Pre‑Service Building and Physical Premises Safety training (within 30 days). Introduction to the Early Intervention and Preschool Special Education Programs (within 90 days). Recognizing the Impact of Bias on Early Childhood Professionals (within 90 days). Working with an Early Childhood Mental Health Consultant (within 90 days). Introduction to Child Care Health Consultation (within 90 days). Maintain all necessary requirements/trainings which include: Current First Aid/CPR/AED certificate or 1 hr First Aid certification through PDIS (every 2 years). OSHA approved Standard Precautions (Annually). Recognition and Reporting of Child Abuse and Neglect (Annually). Prevention of Shaken Baby/Abusive Head Trauma Training (every 2 years). Complete fifteen (15) hours training annually as specified by the Office of Early Childhood. Maintain PDIS profile and current Credential Level. Any additional trainings as assigned by the Preschool Senior Supervisor. Working Conditions Essential Personnel When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel. Physical Demands Moderate physical work; may require ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Frequent standing and walking. May require frequent bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and climbing. Hand/eye coordination for operation of computer. Clear vision to read books, reports and other written material. Frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with students, families, COA employees and citizens. Work Environment Works primarily in a clean, comfortable environment; may require outdoor work with exposure to dust, sun, odors and noise. Equipment Used Standard office equipment, including personal computer and common office software such as email, internet, Word, Excel, Teams, WebEx, PowerPoint, and menu‑driven databases. Use of personal equipment (e.g., cell phone, tools). Requires operation of own motor vehicle. The City of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.
