Section Chief of Surgical Critical Care Department of Surgery, Division of General Surgery The Department of Surgery, Division of General Surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) invites applications for the position of Section Chief of Surgical Critical Care. This is a full-time, tenured faculty position at the Associate or Full Level within the Regular series. The Section Chief of Surgical Critical Care will serve as a mentor, coach, and role model in the professional development of academic physicians and scientists, with exceptional opportunities to lead innovative, cutting-edge research initiatives in surgical and perioperative critical care within a highly collaborative academic environment. This role includes designing and implementing novel treatment protocols, advancing translational and outcomes-based research, and fostering multidisciplinary investigations to improve care for critically ill surgical patients. The Section Chief will be strongly supported in pursuing extramural funding and developing a robust research portfolio, including investigator-initiated and collaborative grants through federal agencies, foundations, and industry partners, while mentoring faculty, fellows, and trainees in scholarly activity. The Section Chief will oversee the multidisciplinary fellowship program in Critical Care Medicine and the medical student rotation in Critical Care Medicine. Additionally, the Section Chief will be responsible for attending-level staffing of the surgical ICU and will collaborate with the Anesthesiology’s Division Chief of Critical Care and ICU Co-Director. Responsibilities also include oversight of quality improvement programs, regularly scheduled case review conferences, standardized order sets, and the implementation of best practices to ensure the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based care. This position offers extensive teaching, clinical, and research opportunities within a large academic center, with practice locations including UCLA Westwood Ronald Reagan Medical Center and UCLA community hospitals. Additional duties include teaching, supervision of trainees and students, and scholarly activity. The successful candidate will demonstrate a record of clinical excellence and academic productivity. Preferred qualifications include substantial clinical experience in the care of critically ill trauma, transplant, and cardiac surgery patients during the perioperative period, as well as general surgical patients requiring ICU-level care. Candidates must hold an MD or equivalent, be board certified in Surgery and Surgical Critical Care, and be eligible for California medical licensure. Salary will be commensurate with academic rank and experience. The posted UC (University of California) salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 5, at Scale 7. In accordance with AB 168 and SB 1162, the initial/base salary range for this position is $243,400 - $600,000. This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan, which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.
