Sr. Backend Engineer - Xumo

Salary: $141,860.82 - 189,147.75 per year Requirements:

• At least 5 years of experience building Java backend servers.
• At least 5 years of experience building web service APIs (REST/SOAP) and working with protocols.
• At least 5 years of experience operating databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, or MongoDB.
• At least 5 years of experience working with Linux-based operating systems such as CentOS or OSX.
• Strong experience developing Docker-based microservices on Kubernetes.
• Strong experience operating servers in cloud environments such as Google Cloud, AWS, or Azure.
• Strong technical leadership and design and implementation skills for solving problems and developing new features.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and deliver high-quality results.
• Preferred: Experience handling video content, including metadata, caption files, and video formats.
• Preferred: Knowledge of HLS, MP4, and MPEG-DASH video formats.
• Preferred: Experience developing scalable, highly available applications.
• Preferred: Experience with message queue transactions for server communication, such as RabbitMQ or Kafka.
• Preferred: Experience with content recommendation systems.

• Lead the design, development, implementation, and analysis of API and data-layer specifications across software products and platforms.
• Develop backend systems that deliver video streams and metadata and support communication between API servers and client applications using formats such as JSON, RSS, and HLS.
• Build and enhance personalized content recommendation pipelines, including ETL data processes.
• Design data workflows, system architecture, database schemas, and error-handling mechanisms for reliable delivery of streams, metadata, and recommendations.
• Deploy and manage backend services in cloud environments, using Kubernetes and managed databases.
• Create test cases, verify system behavior, and document specifications to support quality, reliability, and scalability.
• Gather requirements with product and operations teams, and prepare technical documentation and diagrams for feature development.
• Collaborate across teams to prototype features and translate business and product needs into scalable, maintainable backend solutions.
• Build backend pipelines for video ingestion, content scheduling, and catalog exports.
• Coordinate with server and client teams to prioritize development needs and align on scalability, performance, and maintainability.
• Make technical decisions and enhance features to extend backend capabilities, improve reusable components, and optimize performance.
• Analyze user and product requirements to design system flows and work processes; develop data storage models and define API access patterns and service integration points.
• Partner with quality assurance to document integration and test plans, implement features through the software development lifecycle, and create integration tests that run with each code commit.
• Automate service consumption and define and refine configuration parameters to meet system needs.
• Build monitoring and alerting for live APIs and services; repair, restore, and repave backend services.
• Maintain operational stability and corporate standards, work with security teams to follow best practices and address vulnerabilities, and track defects and enhancements in the issue management system.
• Exercise independent judgment, attend work regularly and punctually, and work nights, weekends, or variable schedules as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned and contribute to customer-focused, collaborative, inclusive work practices and company operating principles.

On our Xumo Software Engineering Team, you will help build and optimize infrastructure that processes partner video content and delivers high-quality streams to millions of viewers. The position is based in Irvine, California, or Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with four days on-site and one day remote.
