Position: Trial Attorney - Medical Malpractice (Defense)

Salary: $160k-$210k/yr

Location: Long Beach, CA

Position Overview
We are seeking a seasoned Trial Attorney to join our Medical Malpractice Defense practice. The ideal candidate will lead complex medical malpractice litigation from investigation through trial, serving as first chair in high-stakes matters and pursuing positive verdicts while protecting client interests. This role combines courtroom advocacy, strategic case development, and collaborative work with experts and clients to achieve favorable outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and try medical malpractice cases as first chair, including jury selection, opening statements, direct and cross-examinations, and closing arguments.
  • Develop and implement litigation strategy for a caseload of medical malpractice defense matters with the goal of securing favorable verdicts or resolutions.
  • Manage all phases of litigation: investigations, pleadings, discovery, motions practice, expert retention and preparation, depositions, and trial preparation.
  • Draft and argue substantive motions and pleadings in state and federal court, and handle complex evidentiary issues at trial.
  • Work closely with medical experts to analyze records, prepare testimony, and effectively challenge opposing experts.
  • Counsel and communicate with institutional and individual clients regarding case strategy, risk assessment, and settlement decisions while maintaining client confidentiality and trust.
  • Supervise, mentor, and delegate work to junior attorneys and paralegals; review work product and provide training on courtroom and litigation skills.
  • Coordinate trial logistics, exhibits, demonstratives, and witness preparation to ensure seamless courtroom presentation.
  • Manage docket, deadlines, and billing; maintain accurate case files and timely communications with clients and colleagues.
  • Participate in business development activities, including presenting at CLEs, contributing to firm publications, and supporting client relationship efforts.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and admission to the state bar in good standing.
  • Minimum 58 years of civil litigation experience with significant medical malpractice defense exposure; prior first-chair trial experience strongly preferred.
  • Proven track record of handling trials to verdict and achieving favorable outcomes in complex cases.
  • Demonstrated courtroom skills: jury trials, motion practice, depositions, and evidentiary hearings.
  • Deep knowledge of medical terminology, medical records review, and the use of expert witnesses in malpractice litigation.
  • Excellent legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills; ability to draft persuasive motions, briefs, and trial materials.
  • Strong case management skills, including the ability to manage multiple matters, meet deadlines, and supervise junior staff.
  • High professional ethics, sound judgment, and the ability to counsel clients through high-stress litigation.
  • Comfortable working in a collaborative team environment and participating in client development and firm initiatives.
