POLICE OFFICER TRAINEE [FLSA: Non-exempt; SHIFT: 40 hours/week]

Job Overview The OPD will hire at either the Police Officer level or Police Officer Trainee level. Attain the necessary training and state certifications to perform intermediate protective service work involving a variety of general or support duty police assignments. This is a training position; the police officer trainee will attend the Law Enforcement Academy, pass the state certification exam, and upon completion become a certified police officer with the City of Oviedo, with a contract for a minimum two‑year commitment. Essential Functions Regularly attend the Law Enforcement Academy. Successfully complete all areas of study while attending the Academy. Pass the State of Florida Law Enforcement Certification Examination. Minimum Qualifications At least 21 years of age and a citizen of the United States. High school graduate or GED meeting state standards. Valid Florida driver’s license. Good physical condition; vision minimum 20/40 corrected. Good moral character; no felony convictions and no misdemeanor convictions involving moral character, perjury, or false statements. Successfully meet agency drug/nicotine use standards and pass a drug/nicotine screen test. Special Requirements Qualify in the Physical Abilities Test (PAT), successfully enroll in the Law Enforcement Academy, pass the writing sample and a physical fitness examination, and sign the Training Reimbursement Agreement. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities General knowledge of the city geography and location of important buildings. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear, comprehensive reports. Ability to deal courteously, but firmly, with the public. Ability to analyze situations and adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances; skill in the operation of motor vehicles.
