Heavy Equipment Mechanic Technician Lead

This position is only open to Montgomery County Government employees. The anticipated hiring range for this position will be $69,601 to $89,991, based on the candidate's qualifications and experience.

The Department of General Services, Fleet Management Services is seeking a Heavy Equipment Mechanic Technician Lead for the Heavy Equipment Shop to perform advanced skilled inspection, maintenance and repairs on diesel, alternative fuel and/or gasoline powered heavy and related equipment and will function as a lead worker.

This position serves as a lead worker and will provide on-the-job training, mentoring, and technical instruction to less experienced Mechanic Technicians. The employee will exercise independent, advanced-level judgment while performing inspections, preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on a full array of medium and heavy-duty truck systems, including engines, fuel systems, exhaust systems, clutches, manual and automatic transmissions, power distribution systems, starting and charging systems, steering systems, air and hydraulic braking systems, air and hydraulic anti-lock braking systems (ABS), heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, and chassis components.

In addition to advanced diagnostic and repair duties, this position serves as the shop lead for new vehicle intake, inspection, and preparation. Responsibilities include coordinating the receipt of new fleet assets, performing pre-delivery inspections, identifying and documenting deficiencies, coordinating warranty repairs with vendors, ensuring all required equipment and accessories are installed, and preparing vehicles for placement into County service.

The position also serves as the lead for manufacturer campaigns, safety recalls, and technical service bulletins. This includes monitoring outstanding campaigns, coordinating repairs with dealerships and manufacturers, maintaining accurate documentation, and ensuring fleet compliance with all applicable recall and campaign requirements.

As a senior technician, the employee will provide technical guidance to other mechanics, assist with troubleshooting complex repairs, help prioritize daily workloads, and promote safe and efficient shop operations. When operational needs require, the employee may serve in a leadership capacity by providing day-to-day direction to shop personnel and assisting with shop coordination during the absence of a Crew Chief to ensure continuity of operations.

The Division of Fleet Management Services has three main worksite locations (Rockville, Silver Spring and Kensington), and the employee will work on specific shifts to be assigned, based on a 24/7-hour operation. Shifts may include nights and weekends and are subject to change based on training/operational requirements.

The individual selected for this position will be considered an Essential Employee. Essential employees must report to work during a period of general emergency or liberal leave.

The selected candidate will be required to successfully complete a medical exam and a drug/alcohol screening.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent (GED or High School Proficiency Examination)

Experience: Prior experience serving as a Mechanic Technician II, with six (6) years of verifiable, progressively responsible experience in problem diagnosis, repair, maintenance and inspection of medium and heavy-duty vehicles and mobile equipment such as, but not limited to, dump trucks, cement mixers, excavators, graders, loaders, backhoes, rollers, pavers, tractors, trenchers, tow trucks, street sweepers, leafers and comparable equipment.

Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, or Special Requirements:

Possession and maintenance of:

• Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Technician Certification in Medium and Heavy Trucks (T1-T8).
• A Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger and Air Brake Endorsements, issued by applicant's state of residence.
• US Environmental Protection Agency Air Conditioning Certification (Clean Air Act, 1990, Section 608 and 609).
• Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Industrial Forklift Certification.
• Completion of the Fleet Management Services Mechanic Technician Training Program (FMSMTTP).

Physical Demands: The ability to work in tiring and uncomfortable positions for long periods, and must continuously bend, reach, stretch, lift, stoop, climb and crouch often on top of, in, and under vehicles and engines in cramped and awkward positions. Performance of the work of the class regularly involves exposure to loud noises, vibrations, dust, dirt and grease. Employees must be able to perform physically strenuous work while standing, lying down, or sitting; and pull, push, lift and carry items which weigh up to 100 pounds, and occasionally in excess of 100 pounds.

Preferred Criteria, Interview Preferences:

• Experience performing preventive maintenance, service inspections and advanced level diagnostic and repairs on medium and heavy-duty trucks and equipment following established standards, reference manuals, and maintenance schedules.
• Experience troubleshooting, diagnosing, repairing and/or overhauling of major components and systems including (but not limited to) gas and diesel engines, automatic and manual transmissions, differentials and transaxles.
• Experience working on advanced heavy truck and equipment vehicle systems, such as diesel emissions, air brakes, hydraulics, PTO's, auxiliary drives, multiplex wiring, and pneumatics.
• Experience using a computer/laptop and various office-suite (such as MS Office), enterprise (such as Oracle) and stand-alone software/systems to communicate, word process, requisition; manage records and conduct research.
• Experience using a Fleet Management Inventory System (such as FASTER or Asset Works).
