About the Position

Positive attitude, teamwork, and dependability are essential. Description: The unit has 21 beds, with all private rooms except for one semi-private room. Overhead lift equipment is available in all rooms. Bedside report and 1-2 hour rounding on patients are required. Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:4-5 during the day and 1:5-6 at night. Common patient diagnoses include end-stage renal disease, acute kidney injury, and patients undergoing hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Other procedures include parathyroidectomies, ileal conduit creations, TURPs, prostatectomies, kidney stone treatments, graft and fistula repairs, and kidney and pancreas transplants, including post-operative care and rejection biopsies. Experience in nephrology or urology is preferred but not mandatory. Charge nurses are available 24/7 and typically do not take patients, but may assist if staffing requires it. House supervisors are also present around the clock. Patient care technicians are available with a ratio of 1:10-11 during the day and 1:10-11 at night. Duties for patient care technicians include taking vital signs, assisting with activities, and performing limited procedures. Nurses are not required to manage ventilators. Bi-pap or C-pap is used for sleep medicine only. Respiratory therapists are available for assistance with treatments. Telemetry is monitored by technicians in a different unit, and nurses receive pages for any rhythm changes. Shifts are scheduled as three 12-hour shifts, either from 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM or 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM. Self-scheduling is available, and the supervisor will consider scheduling needs. Weekend work is required every other weekend for day shifts, but fewer weekends may be necessary for night shifts due to existing staffing. Every other holiday work is also required, with flexibility in negotiation. Floating to other general medicine units is occasionally required based on staffing needs. Any color scrubs may be worn, with guidelines for personal grooming and appearance. Unit-specific training will occur over three days with a preceptor. Charting will be done using the EPIC system.
