Plant Maintenance Supervisor

Overview

The Plant Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for leading and supervising the Plant Maintenance team while ensuring that manufacturing equipment and plant systems remain safe, reliable, and operational. This position directly supervises Plant Maintenance Mechanics, plans and schedules maintenance activities, oversees preventive maintenance programs, and provides technical support when equipment problems or failures occur. The supervisor plays an important role in reducing downtime, improving equipment reliability, and supporting continuous production.

Key Responsibilities

• Directly supervise, lead, and support Plant Maintenance Mechanics.
• Plan, schedule, assign, and monitor daily maintenance work.
• Provide leadership, coaching, training, and performance feedback to maintenance employees.
• Oversee preventive maintenance (PM) programs to help prevent equipment failures and production downtime.
• Manage and maintain the plant's Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
• Troubleshoot and assist with complex mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and manufacturing equipment issues.
• Provide day-to-day support to production teams when equipment failures or maintenance issues occur.
• Analyze equipment problems and identify long-term solutions to prevent recurring failures.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records, documentation, inventory, and work orders.
• Coordinate with outside vendors regarding equipment repairs, parts, services, and maintenance projects.
• Assist with hiring, interviewing, onboarding, and training new maintenance employees.
• Coordinate employee schedules, shift changes, vacation schedules, and maintenance coverage.
• Assist with planning and installation of new or modified plant equipment.
• Provide regular updates to maintenance management regarding equipment issues, repairs, projects, and department performance.
• Ensure maintenance employees follow company policies, procedures, and safety requirements.

Skills and Experience

Experience Is Extremely Important

Previous industrial, manufacturing, or plant maintenance experience is extremely important for this position. The supervisor needs to understand how production equipment operates and be capable of helping mechanics troubleshoot equipment failures and determine effective repair solutions.

A strong candidate should have hands-on experience with industrial maintenance and preferably a multi-craft background , including mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, conveyor, production, and other manufacturing equipment. Experience supervising maintenance employees is also highly valuable.

This is not simply an administrative supervisor position. The ideal candidate should have enough technical knowledge and maintenance experience to make sound decisions when equipment breaks down, guide mechanics through troubleshooting, and identify long-term solutions that improve equipment reliability.

OSHA & Safety

Safety is a major responsibility of the Plant Maintenance Supervisor. The supervisor is responsible for enforcing company safety policies and procedures and ensuring maintenance employees work safely and follow applicable OSHA requirements. The position also involves supervising equipment inspections and addressing potential hazards.

The ideal candidate should understand:

• OSHA regulations and workplace safety requirements
• Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)
• Machine guarding
• Electrical safety
• Proper PPE
• Hazard identification and corrective action
• Safe maintenance procedures
• Safe use of tools and equipment
• Accident and incident prevention
• Employee safety training

The supervisor should lead by example and ensure safety is considered before maintenance work begins.
