Job Description Provide technical advice, guidance and training in assigned engineering program areas. Prepare analyses, reports and recommendations based on engineering determinations. Provide engineering support and consultation related to the engineering program area. Effectively manage assigned projects to ensure timely and accurate completion. Communicate with internal VDOT staff, local government staff, consultants, citizens and FHWA regarding transportation projects and programs. Perform engineering and design necessary to provide the VDOT with accurate special designs for roadway items, review manufacturers' shop drawings, and supervise development and distribution of standard and special design insertable sheets for completing roadway plan assemblies. Provide technical expertise concerning related issues. How You Will Contribute Analyze and interpret engineering data and information; prepare clear and concise reports and recommendations. Establish effective communication between VDOT, contractors, government agencies and the public; investigate issues and resolve complaints. Complete design tasks using appropriate software, including MicroStation and other non-CADD applications. Use VDOT policies and procedures in engineering project development and delivery, ensuring compliance with state and federal laws. Plan, schedule and coordinate engineering program activities to meet deliverables within scope and timeline. Assist in project management tasks such as scope, schedule, budget, change management, quality and status reporting. Conduct research and provide technical assistance on standard and special design issues, particularly roadside safety. Serve on standing committees such as the PCAV and the Roadside Safety Committee. Manage special program initiatives and projects; represent VDOT or program area on committees and work groups. Apply roadway design principles to develop and recommend standard and special design items for a variety of projects, using problem‑solving skills to resolve complex challenges. Demonstrate customer service, teamwork and communication habits reflecting VDOT Values and coordinate information flow orally and in writing. Understand basic structural design. Apply project management procedures and principles. Know roadway design criteria, construction methods, standards, specifications and materials. Build networks and relations with employees, field personnel, contractors, manufacturers and FHWA representatives. Promote excellent customer service to internal and external customers. Use computers and software applications, including MS Office and engineering software programs. Minimum Qualifications Effective oral and written communication. Review electronic file management and survey for compliance. Experience applying roadway design criteria, construction methods, standards, specifications and materials. Skilled in computer use.
