Veterinary Technician I, Animal Resource Center

Job Summary UT Southwestern is actively seeking an experienced Veterinary Technician I to join our Animal Resource Center (ARC) team, to support daily clinical care, surgical assistance, diagnostic testing, and health monitoring for a variety of research animals. We are looking for someone with a minimum of two (2) years of experience in a clinical or research animal setting; AALAS certification is preferred; strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently in standard and containment (ABSL‑2/3) environments. As Veterinary Technician I , responsibilities include pre‑/post‑operative monitoring, blood collection, routine diagnostics, and accurate medical recordkeeping; works under general supervision to provide technical assistance to veterinary medical or research staff in delivering health care, including veterinary medicine, surgery, and radiology, to laboratory animals. Provides organization and coordination of veterinary technical tasks. Work Location Dallas Campus; may or may not require travel to and from other UTSW locations. Shift Requirement Days, Monday through Friday; Rotating on-call; overtime available with management approval. Experience and Education Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent Experience: 2 years working with animals in a clinical or research setting Preferred Licenses and Certifications (AALAS) AMER ASSOC LAB ANIMAL SCIENCE Job Duties Assist the ARC veterinary staff to provide research and health care support for a wide variety of species. Able to routinely work in the animal facility without direct supervision. Provide pre- and post-operative animal monitoring. Maintain animal health and study related records as required by the IACUC and ARC policy. Able to perform routine diagnostic testing utilizing common laboratory equipment. Examples would include internal and external parasite examinations, PCV and total protein and urinalysis. Work comfortably in a microbiological barrier facility as well as ABSL-2 and ABSL-3 containment areas. Obtain routine blood collections from research animals. Perform antigen injections and sample collections for antibody production in research animals. Maintain appropriate medical records as required. Assist in maintaining surveillance of investigator research protocols. Participate in University mandated training such as MRI, Radiation Safety and Blood Borne Pathogens. Perform other duties as assigned.
