Acute Care Medicine serves patients with a full range of clinical issues—from significant blood dyscrasias, advanced endocrine pathology, heart and renal failure, gastrointestinal conditions, infectious diseases, and asthma—to a multitude of other conditions. Due to the patient acuity on the nursing division, advanced training brings new nurses to the highest level of functioning. Each unit is led by a clinical manager and lead charge nurse, supported by an advanced practice nurse, and accompanied by case managers, social workers, physical therapists, dietitians, and pharmacists. This multidisciplinary team works with physicians, nurses, and patient care technicians to provide quality patient care. Role Purpose The Assistant Nurse Manager provides administrative support to the Nurse Manager and direct reports, coordinating patient care, performance management, equipment purchasing, and statistical accumulation. Responsibilities Manages individual staff including hiring, training, assigning work, evaluating performance, and conducting professional development plans to meet department goals. Participates in departmental staffing, revenue and expense budget development, ensuring adherence to goals and responding to business changes. Provides and oversees patient care plans for patients’ age and developmental needs, ensuring optimal wellness and documenting per policy. Creates and implements collaborative care plans based on assessment, diagnosis, and medical treatment. Supports review of staff hours vs scheduled hours, prepares huddle agendas, leads meetings, determines staffing needs, assigns overtime, recommends annual raises, interviews for open positions, conducts performance reviews, drafts corrective actions or coaching, and follows up on disciplinary actions. Responsible for staff productivity and overall operational goals, conducting performance evaluations and recommending improvements. Maintains constant alertness and safe work practices as required by BJC for a safety‑sensitive position.
