Company Description Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana leads the fight against hunger in South Louisiana through food access, advocacy, education, and disaster response. The organization partners with more than 700 community programs across 23 parishes to distribute nutritious food and provide essential support. Role Description The Staff Accountant is a full-time, on-site role based in New Orleans, LA. This position is responsible for day-to-day accounting activities, including recording and reconciling financial transactions, preparing journal entries, and maintaining accurate general ledger accounts. The Staff Accountant assists with monthly and year-end closings, supports budget preparation, and helps produce financial statements and reports for internal stakeholders and external partners. The role includes processing accounts payable and accounts receivable, monitoring cash flow, and ensuring compliance with organizational policies, grant requirements, and applicable accounting standards. The Staff Accountant collaborates with finance team members and program staff to provide timely financial information that supports effective operations and mission delivery. Qualifications Demonstrated proficiency in core accounting functions, including general ledger management, journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial reporting. Experience with accounts payable and accounts receivable processes, cash management, and expense tracking in a nonprofit or similar environment. Strong skills in using accounting software and office productivity tools (e.g., ERP/accounting systems, Excel, and other Microsoft Office applications). Ability to interpret and apply basic GAAP principles, grant and fund accounting requirements, and organizational financial policies. Excellent attention to detail, analytical thinking, and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on accuracy and timeliness. Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain financial information to non-financial team members. Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work both independently and collaboratively in a mission-driven environment. Associate or bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; relevant experience in nonprofit or public sector finance is a plus.
